Netflix Just Added 2025’s R-Rated Sydney Sweeney Flop That Didn’t Deserve To Lose Millions

2025 was a big year for Sydney Sweeney, though the attention wasn’t always about her acting. While she stayed busy, her films had a mixed reception from critics and audiences. Like the previous year, she finished strong with two popular releases, Christy and The Housemaid, both earning high audience scores. However, the other three films she appeared in weren’t as successful, and one particularly flopped – it’s now available to stream on Netflix.

This year, in addition to the critically-panned Apple TV+ thriller Echo Valley, she released Americana after a two-year wait, and starred in the survival thriller Eden. Directed by renowned filmmaker Ron Howard and featuring a stellar cast including Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and Daniel Brühl, Eden unfortunately only earned $2.5 million at the box office despite a $55 million production budget (which was lowered to $35 million with the help of tax incentives). Now, you can watch Eden on Netflix, as it’s been added to their streaming service today.

Why Eden Is Actually Worth Watching

The movie Eden is a strange example of a film with a lot of talent that surprisingly failed at the box office. While it wasn’t a massively expensive production, earning just $2.5 million is a significant underperformance, especially considering the limited marketing efforts. Even with a cast of charismatic and engaging actors, they couldn’t save the film in 2025, and the trailer didn’t effectively explain what the movie was about.

While the film has some underlying tension, it doesn’t fully tell the compelling story it deserves. Eden is based on the true story of Europeans who settled on a Galapagos Island, hoping to create a perfect life for themselves. Rebecca Sweeney gives a strong performance as Margret Wittmer, the central character based on the real-life memoirs, and the entire cast is well-executed. It’s frustrating that so few people had the chance to see it.

While not a groundbreaking film, Eden is well-crafted, displaying the skill you’d expect from director Howard and a talented cast working within a suspenseful thriller. It shares similarities with stories like The Swiss Family Robinson and Lord of the Flies, and even has a bit of the darker tone found in Danny Boyle’s The Beach. It was unfairly overlooked and quickly forgotten, but now that it’s available on Netflix, viewers can rediscover its merits.
