As a long-time fan who has watched every episode of Doctor Who since the TARDIS first materialized on our screens, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Catherine Tate hosting the Doctor Who Prom this year! Her hilarious portrayal of Donna Noble will always hold a special place in my heart, and her return for the 60th anniversary specials was an absolute delight.
With the much-anticipated Doctor Who Prom making a comeback at the Royal Albert Hall, it’s been officially announced that beloved former companion Catherine Tate will take on the hosting role!
Murray Gold revealed in an interview with TopMob that Catherine Tate will be hosting the event. He expressed his delight over this decision, stating, “I’m thrilled it’s her because she’s a symbol of the show. After the specials were aired, she even wrote me a nice note praising my work. Oh, she’s fantastic!”
Initially, Tate made her debut in the 2006 Christmas episode titled “The Runaway Bride.” Later, she took on a permanent role as a companion during season 4. After some time had passed, she appeared once more in the special episodes “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder,” and “The Giggle” alongside David Tennant for the series’ 60th anniversary celebrations.
On the 26th of August, the Doctor Who Symphony Concert is scheduled to occur, featuring the grand compositions from the series by Gold, played by the BBC Welsh National Orchestra.
A filmed version is scheduled to broadcast on BBC One Wales, BBC Two and iPlayer at a later date.
Gold is well-known for his role as the music director of the cherished Doctor Who series from 2005 to 2017. During this time, he composed several iconic themes that remain among the show’s most memorable tunes.
In 2023, he came back for Russell T Davies’s revamp of the series, carrying on with his role during Ncuti Gatwa’s tenure as the Time Lord.
The Prom is set to offer “impressive illumination” and “notable attendees,” and it’s bound to stir excitement among fans as they ponder potential stars gracing the event.
Previously, there were three instances where Doctor Who performed at the Proms: once in 2008, again in 2010, and most recently in 2013. Notable actors such as Freema Agyeman, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Matt Smith, and Jenna Coleman graced the stage during these performances.
