Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Preview: Xbox's Big 2024 Exclusive Keeps Looking Better

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that the upcoming release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has me genuinely excited. Having grown up watching the movies, I can attest to their timeless appeal and the undeniable magic they weave.

For several years, Indiana Jones has been featured in various video games, but none have truly mirrored the essence and style of the movies. However, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, although not yet released, appears to be making the most promising effort to replicate the enchantment of the Spielberg/Lucas films. Recently, ComicBook was invited to a special media preview where they viewed additional game footage and engaged in a Q&A with the developers. So far, the upcoming game seems to be shaping up quite favorably.

Previously, Xbox unveiled the game “Great Circle” during a presentation in June. The initial sneak peek garnered a somewhat divided response from viewers, not due to the displayed quality, but because of an emphasis on narrative over gameplay. However, during our recent preview, developers at MachineGames provided more insights into the game’s story while placing greater emphasis on gameplay aspects such as combat and puzzles.

The adventure titled “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” unfolds in the year 1937, not long after the incidents depicted in “Raiders of the Lost Ark“. As the looming threat of World War II persists, our hero, Dr. Jones, is abruptly awakened by a midnight break-in. With a valuable artifact mysteriously stolen, it falls upon Indy to unravel the Nazi’s latest schemes. His journey will lead him on another thrilling world tour. This time, however, he won’t be venturing out alone; he is accompanied by a resourceful journalist named Gina. Intriguingly, Gina’s camera becomes an essential element in the game’s challenges, as players must capture images at various locations to solve the puzzles that lie ahead.

1) During Indy’s photographic expedition, his journal gradually fills with discoveries he’s made along the way, providing hints and guiding him towards unexplored territories. Unlike the previous June sneak peek, this adventure showcased distinct locations such as the Great Sphinx of Gizeh, which was given special attention. This leg of the journey led Indy to a clue left by Emmerich Voss, the game’s principal antagonist. In true Indiana Jones style, disguises will be crucial for blending in, enabling Indy to pose as a worker and trail the clue to obtain the essential item for his onward travel. The Gizeh segment is fraught with danger, featuring pitfalls filled with spears, scorpion-infested rooms, and while there were no venomous snakes spotted in the preview, the developers confirm that they’ll play a part in the game.

Previously confirmed, Harrison Ford won’t embody Indiana Jones this time; instead, Troy Baker will assume the iconic whip and fedora. In our sneak peek, we delved deeper into Baker’s interpretation of the character, and it’s remarkable how he effectively mimics Ford’s vocal delivery. In a particular scene from the game, Indy’s adventure leads him to the Vatican, where he dons a disguise once more. When one of Indy’s supportive allies comments on his appearance resembling “a man of the cloth,” Indy wittily replies that he chose a different vocation, and this moment perfectly encapsulates Harrison Ford’s charm.

In the upcoming Indiana Jones game by MachineGames, there will be numerous puzzles for Indy to solve. However, action sequences have always been a significant aspect of these films, and players can engage in combat using fists, guns, and Indy’s signature whip. But beware, as using guns could put Indy in peril. Instead, the gameplay emphasizes stealth and navigating around enemies rather than confronting them head-on, which might come as a surprise given the Wolfenstein series’ reputation for action. During our preview, we did witness some action scenes, including an intriguing moment where Indy is on the wing of a moving airplane. Unfortunately, we didn’t get insights into how Indy ended up in that situation or how players will help him escape it.

MachineGames’ team has hinted that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is their largest project to date, though they haven’t disclosed specific dimensions. The game promises numerous substantial side missions for Indy, with the campaign itself appearing to be larger than any other title from the studio, even if players rush through it. It appears that the team is drawing upon their extensive past expertise for this project. When probed about the possibility of a third-person Indiana Jones game, they mentioned that first-person games have been a cornerstone of their work, and they’ve always intended to stick with this tradition. However, previews suggest some third-person elements, which the developers liken to The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

MachineGames is exploring various strategies to make the game “Great Circle” appealing to numerous players, despite its potentially imposing size. While specifics were scarce, it’s clear that the game will provide adjustable options. For instance, players can reduce the complexity of the game’s puzzles if they find them challenging. Additionally, players can lower the overall difficulty level. Given the global popularity of Indiana Jones, it seems prudent to prioritize accessibility, ensuring the game caters to various play styles and diverse audiences.

Based on what’s been displayed thus far, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle appears to be one of this year’s most enticing games. Remarkably, the game seems strikingly similar to an Indiana Jones movie, in terms of its style and humor. However, as no one has had a chance to play the game yet, it remains uncertain how well these elements will mesh once the completed product is launched. Nevertheless, each time MachineGames unveils Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, I grow increasingly eager to discover more about it. Fingers crossed that we’ll be able to get hands-on experience with the game before its scheduled release date on December 9th.
