The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday confirms a significant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and brings up a debate from Endgame that even those who made the film couldn’t resolve. Set to release on December 18, 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will feature Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom. He won’t be the only familiar face returning after a heartfelt goodbye in Avengers: Endgame; it’s now confirmed that Chris Evans will also be back as Steve Rogers in the new film.
To get fans hyped for the new Avengers: Doomsday movie, Marvel released four short previews before showings of Avatar: Fire and Ash. One of these previews suggests Steve Rogers, Captain America, will return, showing him with a baby – likely his and Peggy Carter’s. While Marvel hasn’t shared many details about Chris Evans’ return, it seems likely to revisit a major debate from Endgame. However, bringing this up again could also complicate things further.
Steve Rogers’ Return in Avengers: Doomsday Will Reignite Endgame’s Time-Travel Debate

While Avengers: Endgame has many strengths, its use of time travel is a major weakness. Time travel is always a tricky plot device, demanding careful writing to avoid inconsistencies – and even then, sequels often create paradoxes or break established rules. Avengers: Endgame doesn’t even make it to a sequel before its time travel logic falls apart, contradicting itself before the movie is over.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has established that time travel doesn’t change the past or future of a single timeline. Instead, altering events in the past creates a new, separate timeline, leaving the original unchanged. While this concept is a bit confusing, it’s generally understandable. However, things become problematic when the heroes try to return the Infinity Stones to their correct timelines – a solution that doesn’t quite make sense – and particularly when Steve Rogers decides to stay in the past with Peggy Carter.
This idea sparks a lot of debate because it’s unclear how time travel works in this situation. There are two possibilities: Steve might travel back to a time when his younger self was frozen, and live out a new life with Peggy. Or, he could stay in an alternate timeline’s past with her. Both options create plot holes, and surprisingly, even the writers and directors of Endgame disagree about which one is the correct explanation.
Even Avengers: Endgame’s Writers & Directors Couldn’t Agree on the Time Travel Mechanics

I’ve been fascinated by the details of Steve Rogers’ time travel in Avengers: Endgame, and it’s something even the filmmakers can’t fully agree on! Originally, the Russo brothers suggested he jumped to an alternate timeline to be with Peggy Carter, which seemed like a neat solution. But it always bothered me – why would that Peggy want the Steve from our timeline, and what happened to her Captain America? Plus, how did he even get back to our timeline as an old man? Seeing Loki really highlighted this – the TVA should have absolutely noticed and intervened! It’s a puzzle I keep coming back to, honestly.
This might explain why the screenwriters, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, had a different vision for Captain America’s ending than the directors. Shortly after Endgame came out, they shared their thoughts with Fandango.
While we don’t claim to be time travel experts, the Ancient One made it clear that removing an Infinity Stone causes a timeline to split. Therefore, Steve Rogers simply traveling back in time wouldn’t create a new reality. I don’t think he ended up in an alternate universe. Instead, I believe there was a period in history, roughly from 1948 onwards, where two Steve Rogers existed simultaneously – though for much of that time, one of them was frozen in ice, so they wouldn’t have encountered each other.
This creates its own problems, mainly that Steve would have to completely avoid all contact with people to prevent creating alternate timelines. Even seemingly minor actions can have big, unforeseen consequences. Ultimately, Steve’s reasoning doesn’t quite add up. And his reappearance in Avengers: Doomsday won’t just bring this debate back up – it will likely make the situation even more complex.
Doomsday Has the Potential to Make Endgame’s Time-Travel Problems Worse

Since the Russo brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, it’s likely they’ll revisit Steve Rogers’ story using the alternate timeline concept. However, this new film could actually create more debate about Steve’s fate in Endgame. Bringing him back will require some complicated explanations, and time travel stories often become confusing as a result. This could lead to plot holes or the movie contradicting itself. While Steve’s original ending wasn’t perfect, it might have been the stronger choice overall.
Okay, so everyone’s buzzing about Steve Rogers potentially coming back in Avengers: Doomsday, and honestly, I’m dying to hear what you think!
