As a devoted fan of both Channing Tatum‘s captivating performances and the Marvel universe, I find myself deeply immersed in the intriguing dynamics that unfold between these two worlds. The playful banter between Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Gambit (Channing Tatum) in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a testament to the chemistry that can only be forged through shared passion, hard work, and a pinch of friendly rivalry.
As a passionate fan, I’m excited to share that Channing Tatum is openly discussing his thoughts on the accent jokes in the Deadpool and Wolverine series. In one scene, Ryan Reynolds’ character, Deadpool, quips, “Who’s your dialect coach? The Minions?” This refers to the Minion characters from Despicable Me who speak with a similar, mumbled accent. Gambit’s hard-to-understand speech is a recurring joke in these films. Deadpool even references the 1996 film Sling Blade and breaks the fourth wall by claiming “we’re missing critical exposition” when delivered by the New Orleans native, Tatum himself.
In a lie detector test overseen by his director and future wife, Zoë Kravitz, for the movie “Blink Twice”, Tatum was asked if the Deadpool’s Minion joke could be considered as fair criticism. He responded, “‘Fair’ is an intriguing term in that question. I don’t believe that’s a fair assessment.” The lie detector confirmed that his response was truthful, indeed.
Previously, Tatum confessed to Access Hollywood that the Cajun accent in the movie was scripted by Ryan Reynolds. The dialogue wasn’t improvised much, but the Cajun dialect is quite specific. Having grown up in Mississippi and with a father from New Orleans, Tatum is familiar with it, though he hasn’t used it before. He mentioned that there were certain idiosyncrasies that were distinctly Cajun, and they intended it to be somewhat unintelligible, which was part of the humor. Reynolds would sometimes say, “I don’t want to know anything you’re saying during this take, so I just cranked it up,” while at other times he’d say, “Alright, now I need to understand what you’re saying.”
In a social media post, Reynolds genuinely honored Tatum by stating that the role of “Chan” seemed tailor-made for him, a true Cajun.
Ryan Reynolds stated that his experience with attempting to create an authentic Gambit film for over a decade mirrors his own, as the character deeply resonates with him. He expressed that it’s high time Remy LeBeau, or Gambit, is brought forward and given proper representation. Reynolds mentioned that Chan was the right person to bring this beloved comic character to life, praising him for creating one of the most fascinating and underutilized characters in the comics world. Reynolds further expressed his excitement about Channing Tatum breathing new life into Gambit at an ideal moment and in a fitting manner.
