Spike Lee has always strived to do the right thing through moviemaking.
While accepting the Career Achievement Award at the Critics Choice Association’s celebration of Black Cinema and Television in Los Angeles, the director of Jungle Fever highlighted his groundbreaking work as evidence of his successful career.
He urged people to appreciate the quality of the work, specifically mentioning Spike Lee’s films, in an exclusive interview with TopMob News at the event on December 9th.
The 68-year-old graciously accepted the award, but emphasized that his long career in Hollywood is thanks to the continued support of his fans.
He explained that people in his community have supported his films ever since his first movie, She’s Gotta Have It, came out in 1986. He added that next year will mark the 40th anniversary of his filmmaking career.
Lee Daniels, known as Spike, has consistently found success over the years, including with his latest film, the crime thriller Highest 2 Lowest, featuring Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, and A$AP Rocky. Despite already winning an Oscar, he continues to create compelling stories for the big screen.
“There’s a lot of films I have not made yet,” he continued, “but it’ll get done.”
Beyond creating his own stories, Spike has offered guidance to aspiring artists, but he’s always been realistic about the challenges of the creative life.

He told students at a Chapman University master class in October that anyone who claims their path to success was without obstacles isn’t being truthful. He emphasized that everyone faces challenges along the way, and it’s simply not accurate to suggest otherwise.
Even though Spike was honest about how tough it is to succeed in filmmaking, he encouraged new filmmakers not to be discouraged by setbacks.
He warned that things would be difficult at times. He said it’s alright to feel down for a day, but after that, you need to recover and keep moving forward.
