Anime continues to be a major draw in the competition between streaming services. While platforms like Crunchyroll and HIDIVE focus specifically on anime, others – including Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime, and Netflix – offer a mix of classic and new anime titles to attract viewers. Recently, Netflix in North America unexpectedly featured a popular Dragon Ball movie, Battle of Gods, and the results have been impressive. Even twelve years after its initial release, the film is still breaking records.
The movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods became available on Netflix on December 16th, giving subscribers a chance to see the film that revived the Dragon Ball Z series. Although it wasn’t called Dragon Ball Super, it connected the end of Dragon Ball Z to the beginning of the new series. Netflix reports that the Toei Animation film ranked sixth in its “Top 10 Non-English Movies” list from December 15th to December 21st, earning 1.8 million views and proving that fans are still eager to experience Son Goku’s adventures.
The Background of Battle of Gods
After the defeat of Kid Buu, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods brought Goku and the Z Fighters back to the screen with a new threat: Beerus, the God of Destruction, who arrived on Earth. This movie’s story was later incorporated into the Dragon Ball Super anime, though some of the details of Goku’s battle with Beerus were altered. Following the film’s release, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama explained that the new series was, in part, a reaction to the poorly received live-action movie, Dragon Ball Evolution. In an interview with Kanzenshuu, Toriyama was very direct about his disappointment with the live-action adaptation.
The action sequences in the second half of Battle of Gods are truly spectacular and exceeded my expectations. I was pleasantly surprised – it was a huge improvement over a recent live-action adaptation from another country, which just didn’t work. As you’d expect from Japanese animation, the quality is outstanding! I had similar issues with the Hollywood Dragon Ball movie. The script didn’t understand the source material’s world or unique qualities, and the story felt uninspired. I even offered suggestions for improvement, but the filmmakers seemed overly confident and didn’t take my advice. The final product felt far removed from what a Dragon Ball movie should be and didn’t meet my expectations at all.
