Seasonal comic book specials, like those released around holidays, are a long-standing tradition for both DC and Marvel. These issues often feature entertaining and touching stories with popular and lesser-known characters. One of the most famous is Marvel’s Swimsuit Special, which returned after a long break earlier this year. Following its successful revival, Marvel announced a winter edition, Marvel Winter Break Special #1, and it’s now available just in time for the holidays.
This one-shot comic doesn’t try to revolutionize the medium, and it delivers pretty much what you’d anticipate, particularly if you read this summer’s Marvel Swimsuit Special: Friends, Foes, Rivals #1. However, it effectively continues the story started in that special, and it’s genuinely enjoyable. It features a sweet story, appearances from popular characters, a few awkward jokes, and lots of fantastic artwork, especially with all the included pin-ups. It’s a fun read and definitely worth your time.

Marvel Winter Break Special Has Solid Ties to the Swimsuit Special, Even if It’s Style Over Substance

This summer’s ‘Swimsuit Special’ story took a strong stance against big corporations and artificial intelligence, presenting it as an unofficial production by Roxxon. The story cleverly highlighted greed – Roxxon used AI to create a swimsuit special featuring the Avengers, which then motivated the heroes to create their own opposing special. The recent ‘Winter Break Special’ continues this narrative, with Roxxon offering a seemingly insincere apology for the previous controversy and unveiling their proposed solution to climate change: the Climifier. This device claims to restore an area’s climate to its natural state, but its first deployment in the Savage Land transforms the lush jungle into a frozen wasteland. Unsurprisingly, the heroes are unhappy with this, and Rogue gathers a team to address the problem.
This story is a fun continuation of the previous ‘Swimsuit Special,’ revisiting the ongoing conflict with the villainous Roxxon corporation and its aftermath. The heroes are once again tasked with fixing the problems Roxxon creates, and the narrative playfully hints at some alluring situations along the way. Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs effectively connect this story to the previous one, giving the mission a clear purpose. It’s a pleasant surprise when a story clearly intended to attract attention also delivers genuine enjoyment. However, the way the heroes end up in revealing outfits feels a bit forced and contrived, especially considering the setting. While the writing itself is solid and capable of more subtle storytelling, the plot prioritizes style over substance, leaving some potential unrealized. It works, but it could have been much more impactful with a more natural approach.
The book is visually engaging and a lot of fun. Nick Bradshaw’s artwork is great, and the variety of pin-up illustrations are interesting and offer appealing looks for all characters. It’s refreshing to see both male and female heroes presented equally, and it works really well here. Some of the art is truly exceptional – the Ghost Rider illustrations, in particular, are surprisingly amazing and unexpected.
The Marvel Winter Break Special #1 is a genuinely enjoyable comic with a solid story and fantastic artwork. While these seasonal specials aren’t meant to be overly dramatic, this issue successfully blends in some weightier themes – like Roxxon’s relentless greed – with visually appealing art, making it a real pleasure for fans. We hope to see more of these seasonal specials, both winter and summer, in the future.
