As a long-time fan of both Marvel and DC, I must say that following Sean Gunn’s journey through these iconic universes has been a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions. His unique perspective, gained from working with James Gunn in both Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the new DC Universe, offers a fascinating insight into the differences and similarities between the two powerhouses.
As a gamer, I’ve been a fan of both Marvel and DC for as long as I can remember, these two titans have dominated the superhero landscape for decades. Being fortunate enough to work on both sides, portraying Kraglin in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series and confirmed for multiple roles in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, I can attest that the creative process behind each is like night and day. Recently, during an interview with The Wrap, I shared my unique perspective on this age-old debate.
Gunn stated that he joined Marvel’s operation when things were already running smoothly and successfully, as he had previously worked on the DC film “Suicide Squad,” but since then, DC has undergone major changes with his brother taking over as head of the studio. As a result, it’s like comparing apples to oranges because each studio is in a different stage of development.
Essentially, Gunn stated that at their core, collaborating with his brother is more alike than unlike other experiences. Therefore, since he worked with his brother in both Marvel and DC, there are many shared aspects in the way things get done.
Who Is Sean Gunn Playing in the DCU?
Currently, Gunn is set to portray three distinct characters within the DC Universe. He’ll reprise his role as Weasel from 2021’s “The Suicide Squad” in the upcoming animated series “Creature Commandos”. Furthermore, he’ll provide voice-overs for the series adaptation of G.I. Robot. Moreover, he has been cast as Maxwell Lord, a character often associated with DC’s Justice League financier, though it remains uncertain which project will introduce this character.
In a conversation with The Wrap, Gunn explained that while he can’t reveal too many details, they did discuss the character of Lord using relevant written materials as a reference. He also mentioned that they didn’t base their discussion on any live performances; instead, they drew from these written sources to guide their interpretation.
Creature Commandos is set to debut exclusively on Max this December.
