The Purge 6 Gets A Hopeful Update After Months of Silence (Exclusive)

Fans are wondering what’s happening with The Purge movie series. We’re talking about the horror films, not anything happening in real life like in The Hunger Games. Since the first film came out in 2013, there have been five movies and a TV show, but the last one, The Forever Purge, was released in 2021 – and we haven’t seen a new installment in four years.

The latest film essentially restarted the Purge story, revealing that the authoritarian New Founding Fathers of America have regained control and secretly launched a new, ongoing wave of violence called the Forever Purge. This means the annual Purge night with its set rules is over, and people are now freely committing acts of violence whenever they want – a frightening development for the country, but a promising one for the filmmakers, who have opened up exciting new possibilities for future movies.

The Purge Producer Hints At Progress On Part 6

Brad Fuller, the producer behind the upcoming Anaconda reboot with Paul Rudd and Jack Black, recently discussed the future of The Purge franchise with ComicBook. He confirmed he’s eager to collaborate with series creator James DeMonaco on The Purge 6. Fuller expressed his enthusiasm for working with DeMonaco, highlighting his deep understanding of the Purge universe as its creator.

James DeMonaco is currently writing a script for a potential sixth Purge film, and producer Kyle Fuller expressed enthusiasm for the project. Fuller mentioned he’d especially like to see Frank Grillo reprise his role, noting their friendship and Grillo’s strong fit within the franchise. He also stated a preference for creators to return for subsequent installments, suggesting a willingness to move forward if the script is promising.

The Purge 6 Already Has A Story & Star

Frank Grillo, known for his roles in films like Superman and Avengers: Endgame, played a central character in two The Purge movies (Anarchy and Election Year). Many fans are curious about what happened to his character, Leo Barnes, in the latest film, The Forever Purge.

Last year, actor Zach Gilford shared some exciting news about a potential sixth Purge movie. He revealed the script was finished and would focus on his character, Leo Barnes. Gilford hinted it could be the final installment, jokingly comparing it to a repeatedly retiring athlete. James DeMonaco is set to direct if the project gets the go-ahead, but the decision hinges on budget and the scale of the film, given the franchise’s history. Gilford described the script as excellent.

James DeMonaco shared that filming is planned for either late this year or next year, as he told Bloody-Disgusting in July.

The Purge film series has consistently been profitable for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, who jointly produce and market the movies. What began as a low-budget, single-location indie film costing just $3 million has grown into a franchise with average production costs of $10–12 million, typically earning over $100 million in ticket sales. The only exception was The Forever Purge, which cost $18 million to make but earned the least, bringing in $77 million.

It’s too early to say if The Forever Purge signals a downturn for the Purge series. 2021 was still a difficult year for movies due to the pandemic, and this installment lacked the star power or continued story arc that fans had come to expect. Like The First Purge (2018), it didn’t follow the main storyline with Leo Barnes. Plus, many viewers felt the film’s themes of increasing darkness and authoritarianism were unwelcome at a time when people were hoping for positive change.

It’s clear things have changed, and unfortunately, DeMonaco’s stories feel more relevant than ever. His vision of a return to authoritarian rule in America, the violent outbreak of the Purge, and the resulting resistance groups, are strikingly timely.
