As a lifelong Star Wars fan who’s been through the highs and lows of the galaxy far, far away, I can confidently say that the climax of Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco’s epic run on Darth Vader is shaping up to be an unforgettable moment in the saga. The tension between our beloved antihero and his arch-nemesis Palpatine has been building for decades, and it seems that we are finally at the brink of a confrontation that will redefine the galaxy.
In this week’s Star Wars: Darth Vader #50, Sly Moore says, “You managed to rescue the young Skywalker, but he won’t be joining you. You can’t defeat the Emperor on your own.” This is the finale of Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco’s run on the Marvel comic series, titled “Terminus” and scheduled for release on September 18th. It marks the end of Marvel’s current storyline set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, where Vader sacrifices himself to save his son, Luke Skywalker, from the Emperor aboard the Death Star II.
But Vader saved Luke long before the return of Anakin Skywalker. Below, read on for a preview of what to expect from the 64-page Darth Vader finale and a recap of recent events.
A FEW ISSUES AGO IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY…
Darth Vader, the Supreme Leader of a secretive Imperial faction known as Schism Imperial, has been working against Emperor Palpatine. During confrontations with the Cult of Eternal Sith and the fearsome Summa-Verminoth on Exegol’s Sith Citadel, Vader obtained a fiery red Kyber crystal from the Kyber Temple. He subsequently crafted a staff and shield using these crystals, which were essential to powering the Death Star’s cannons.
In a prophetic dream about their destinies within the Empire, Emperor Palpatine taunted his Sith apprentice: “I suspected that upon witnessing Exegol’s power, you would ultimately strive to claim it for your own. This is inherent in the Sith – our thirst for power is insatiable. But for what purpose will you wield this power? Are you and I the only Sith, or does this title belong to you and your son? Or perhaps it belongs to him alone?
While on the planet Caranthanax B, the ex-handmaiden of Queen Amidala of Naboo, Sab?, who knew Luke’s parents as Anakin and Padmé, faced off against the Jedi. Her intention was to stir up his dark side. As Vader felt Luke’s anger through the Force, he tried to harness the volatile energy of the Kyber crystal from Exegol. “Anger breeds hate,” Vader warned, “and hate fuels power.” Sab? was determined to slay Luke if she detected any trace of the Sith in him; however, the Jedi managed to reassure her: “I am not my father.
Administrator Moore held a similar intention of eliminating Skywalker since, in his view, “eliminating the boy would foil the Emperor’s most cherished schemes.” Enraged by this plan, Vader resisted, prompting an Umbaran named Schism Imperial to betray Vader and implant a brain from a mind-controlling droid into Vader’s armor to seize his Kyber crystals.
Administrator Moore conveyed to the Schism that according to the Sith belief, there can only be two – a master and an apprentice, like the Emperor and Vader or the Emperor and Skywalker, or even Vader and Skywalker. However, if we eliminate both Vader and Skywalker, who would remain? I, being the only one left, will assume the role of the second Sith, sharing power with the Emperor. Consequently, the Schism Imperial will transform into the Empire itself.
The Schism betrayed and left Vader, just as he had done with the M.A.R. Corps – a group of cybernetic rebel warriors named Tandorvo, Masakint, Blades, and Chamdaka. While Vader was imprisoned within his own body, the Schism assaulted the Jedi and their allies on Caranthanax B using their Kyber weapon. When Vader alerted the M.A.R. Corps that the Schism intended to eliminate the Rebellion’s hero, he urged them, “If you wish to protect him… you must seek my aid.
In simpler terms, ZED-6-7, a droid, hypothesized that Darth Vader wanted to save Skywalker because the Jedi could potentially grow strong and beneficial if he lived through the split (Schism). At this point, Vader managed to free himself from the control of the M.A.R. Corps’ programming as their Death Machine landed on Caranthanax B. Here, Administrator Moore suggested an alliance with Skywalker. She remarked, “I used to believe that the rule of two referred to the Emperor and Vader, or perhaps one of them and you. But what if it meant… you and me? The Schism and the Rebellion – those could bring down the Empire.
As the relentless Death Machine of Schism loomed over our planet, threatening to extinguish every last spark of life, even my own dear Sab?, I found myself standing before Administrator Moore with no other choice but to give myself up. In that moment, I felt an eerie presence, a familiar one – it was Anakin Skywalker, on Caranthanax B.
