Initially seen as an unusual combination, Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding quickly won over viewers during their stint on The Great British Bake Off last year. Now, after having filmed another season together, they are good friends and continue to entertain in the show’s 15th series – this being Noel’s 8th series as part of the team.

What can you tell us about this latest series of Bake Off?

Alison Hammond finds the bar set exceptionally high. This season, things have taken a distinctly unique turn. She expresses sympathy for the judges’ predicament this year.

Noel Fielding There are three incredibly innovative bakers. Any one of them could have won.

Alison experienced some mishaps: a few items were scorched, others crumbled, and there were unfortunate incidents. In an attempt to impress, she lost her balance while working at a platform, causing her to fall backwards and land on the floor. Most of the tears are coming from Noel.

Noel I did actually cry when one of them went home. They were like nobody I’d ever met before.

What was the best thing you ate?

Alison The winning Showstopper at the end. It was delicious.

Noel There were some mousse cakes that were amazing. I’m like a bumblebee, I love sugar.

Alison: The ’70s-style layer cakes were fantastic during the ’70s themed week! It was an enjoyable time for everyone. They all donned ’70s fashion attire! Regrettably, we overlooked the trend as it wasn’t anticipated.

Alison, last year you ate far too much cake and often felt sick. Have you learnt your lesson?

Alison I think I have, but Noel would probably disagree.

Noel I’ve got a second series of The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin coming up so I said to her, “I’ve got to be good this year.” Alison said, “I will, too, you’ve got to stop me because I’ve got no willpower.” Then every time I saw her, she was hiding with a big lump of cake hanging out of her mouth.

Alison I’ve improved. I’ve added three pounds to my weight this year; it was 14 last year. Seeing Prue consume twelve chocolate cakes and struggle made me think, “I’m truly grateful I’m not a judge. I don’t believe I’d find pleasure in that situation.

I’ll keep going with Alison for as long as they want me

How are Prue and Paul this year?

Noel Pruitt possesses a boundless amount of vitality that outmatches our collective reserves. She’s constantly pushing her own limits, and this year, she chose to learn how to sing on her own.

Alison shared that we were humming “Morning Has Broken” in the dressing room. Paul has been dispensing greetings like water, and he’s developed a unique gesture too – it’s sort of a half-shake, where he pats people on their backs instead.

At one moment, I held onto his hand with the intention of persuading him to shake someone else’s hand. Having spent eight years here, I consider myself quite knowledgeable about the situation. In a sense, I see myself as a Michelin-starred chef in my mind, yet I rarely apply all that I have learned.

Noel, what keeps you coming back?

Alison It’s me, isn’t it?

Affirmative, it’s indeed Alison. Plus, there’s Prue, Paul, the whole team, and the added charm of the beautiful location. When I took on this job, I didn’t anticipate enjoying socializing with the bakers and forming friendships as much as I do now. But I truly cherish that aspect. I genuinely enjoy spending time with them; they’re quite humorous. As long as Alison wants me around, I’ll stay.

What do you enjoy about working together?

Alison finds that Noel’s mind is extraordinarily inventive. Unlike her co-host Dermot O’Leary, who is as reliable and predictable as a clock, Noel always keeps her guessing with his unpredictable words and actions. In truth, she often finds herself staying alert to keep up with him.

Noel, the unique aspect of you as a comedian lies in the fact that your humor feels spontaneous rather than carefully constructed. Unlike other comedians who deliberate over structure and what their peers are doing, you seem to effortlessly exude natural wit without putting much thought into it.

What if Alison leaves?

Alison I ain’t going nowhere, bub.

Noel, as long as I’m welcome, I’ll remain here. In today’s world, there’s intense competition among various channels and streamers, but only a few stand out: Gogglebox, Strictly, Bake Off… are among the notable ones that manage to break through the clutter.
