
The story opens with the murder of 17-year-old Tanja Lorentzen in Tromsø, Norway. Two detectives, Jonas Engström and Erik Vik, are assigned to the case. Jonas, a former Swedish officer with a troubled past – he had a relationship with a witness and relocated to Norway – and Erik begin the investigation. When their initial attempt to arrest a suspect fails – the suspect escapes and Jonas accidentally shoots Erik, then falsely claims the fugitive was responsible – Jonas is consumed by guilt. Under the constant daylight of the Arctic summer and plagued by insomnia, he spirals into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the real killer, losing his grasp on what’s real.
