Agatha All Along: What If It’s Not Mephisto?

Agatha All Along: What If It's Not Mephisto?

As a seasoned Marvel fan with over two decades of comic book lore under my belt, I must say that the latest addition to the MCU, Agatha All Along, has me intrigued and on the edge of my seat! The theories swirling around this series are as captivating as Wanda’s hexes, with Mephisto being a hot topic once again. However, I have a hunch that this time, we might be barking up the wrong tree.

“Agatha All Along” is currently streaming on Disney+, and the initial two-episode release has sparked much debate among Marvel enthusiasts. (SPOILER ALERT) In these opening episodes, Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn, manages to break free from the spell cast by Wanda Maximoff and confronts her current predicament: she’s lost her magical abilities. The first two instalments chronicle Agatha as she starts to rally a group of ‘odd’ witches who might assist her on a journey along the Witches’ Path, but what is her ultimate goal?

Given that Agatha All Along serves as a follow-up to the storyline in WandaVision, it makes sense that this fresh series is carrying forward one of the most prominent fan theories from its predecessor: the speculation that Marvel’s foremost devil, Mephisto, will (at long last) make an appearance within the show.

…Yet, this situation seems familiar. The character Mephisto was a hot topic every week during WandaVision’s run, and it’s been that way ever since, whenever a new Marvel Cinematic Universe project involving mysticism or the supernatural (like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Moon Knight) emerges. It appears that Agatha All Along will follow suit, but let’s explore another theory instead.

What If Mephisto has nothing to do with this?

It’s evident that the series “Agatha All Along” is expanding the mystical and occult aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a realm inhabited by formidable dark entities such as dark lords and demons.

Child of Mephisto

A widely-discussed fan speculation suggests that Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio Vidal, might be more complex than just a “warrior witch.” Many viewers have noticed hints of past connections between Rio and Agatha, leading some to believe there’s a backstory involving the acquisition of the Darkhold. Some even propose that Rio could have been instrumental in this, acting as an insider to facilitate the theft from within. Given that the Darkhold is a demonic artifact, it seems plausible that Rio, being a potential offspring of a devil herself, would be ideally suited to aid in such a task.

Marvel’s character Blackheart is a malevolent being (or “demonic overlord”) born from the dark energy accumulated in a New York town where violence and bloodshed had persisted for centuries, crafted by Mephisto. However, when Blackheart sought to seize power himself, Mephisto cast him out onto Earth, where Blackheart aimed to corrupt human souls and gather them for his conflict against his own father.

As an ardent Marvel fan, I can’t help but imagine how electrifying it would be to see Aubrey Plaza step into the role of Blackheart! Given her prior experience in the X-Men universe as a formidable villain in Legion, where she was unveiled as none other than the Shadow King, this casting choice could serve as an exciting Easter egg for us Marvel enthusiasts.

In the series “Agatha All Along,” showrunner Jac Schaeffer has hinted at the possibility of alluding to a long-anticipated Marvel character, possibly portrayed by Plaza or appearing as another character altogether: Blackheart could mention “Mephisto” without Mephisto himself making an appearance, while setting up the stage for future Mephisto storylines or projects. The scale of introducing Mephisto’s child would be more fitting for a Marvel TV production.

Chthon

The practice of witchcraft in the MCU has had another entity attached to it: Chthon, the first demon. Like Blackheart, Chthon is an entity that has been in Marvel lore for quite a while. He was an Elder God who became the first master of black magic and, who with his brother Set became a demon. Chthon wrote the Darkhold as a link between Earth and his home realm, the source of his power. Chthon is also the progenitor of the demonic creatures (goblins, harpies) and monster races (vampires, werewolves, zombies) that exist within the Marvel Universe.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chthon was responsible for crafting Wundagore Mountain, adorning its stones with ancient prophecies and enchantments that eventually became known as the Darkhold. Among these predictions was the destiny of the Scarlet Witch, which significantly influenced Wanda’s journey in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Since Wundagore has vanished, it’s possible that Agatha is following a pathway, the Witches’ Road, towards the entity who brought witchcraft into existence.

Wanda All Along

It could come as quite a surprise (or maybe not) if it turns out that Agatha regains her strength solely by reviving the Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen. Producers from Marvel Studios have been rather secretive about where Wanda ended up when Wundagore Mountain collapsed – who’s to say she didn’t wind up at the end of The Witches’ Path?
