According to Variety, Netflix is giving fans a sneak peek at its new animated Stranger Things spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. The first two episodes will be shown in select AMC theaters nationwide on April 18th at 12 PM and 3 PM local time. The show officially launches on Netflix on April 23rd. Tickets will be available for purchase starting Wednesday, March 18th at 8 AM Pacific Time, and attendees will also receive a special collectible item while supplies last.
The episodes will be shown in 34 locations nationwide, including the Paris Theater in New York and Netflix House Philadelphia. A complete list of participating theaters is available on the AMC Theatres website.
The success of Tales from ’85 – both in cinemas and on streaming – could determine whether more Stranger Things spin-offs are made, and if future episodes are even greenlit. While the show’s universe has expanded through comics and novels – sometimes focusing on minor characters or revisiting favorites – nothing has captured the public’s imagination quite like the original series. The stage play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, offered deeper background on important characters, but its limited run meant it didn’t reach as wide an audience as the Netflix show.
The success of Stranger Things is remarkable, especially considering the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, didn’t have much experience directing TV shows before. In the last ten years, very few series have captured as much public interest – or earned as much money – as the show set in Hawkins, Indiana. But it remains to be seen whether the Duffer brothers can replicate this success with different stories and characters, or if it was the unique combination of this particular cast and plot that made the show so popular.
It’s always tough to satisfy every fan of a popular series, and the ending of Stranger Things caused a lot of disagreement – some viewers even hoped for more episodes! Now, with the new spin-off, Tales from ’85, the creators, the Duffer brothers, are in a tricky spot. If this spin-off isn’t well-received, they risk losing the support of remaining fans. However, a successful spin-off could win back those who were disappointed with the original ending. The Duffers have hinted at even more spin-offs, and how well Tales from ’85 performs will likely determine how quickly those future projects get made.
