Blizzard Entertainment is reportedly working on a StarCraft shooter again

What you need to know

  • Speaking with IGN about his upcoming book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier revealed that Blizzard Entertainment is in the early stages of working on a StarCraft shooter.
  • The small team is working on the project under the leadership of Dan Hay, a developer who previously worked on Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise.
  • Blizzard Entertainment has attempted to craft a StarCraft shooter twice in the past, with both attempts ending up being canceled.

As a long-time devotee of Blizzard Entertainment and a StarCraft enthusiast since its inception, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation upon hearing about the rumored shooter project. The history of StarCraft has been a rollercoaster ride, with projects like StarCraft: Ghost and Ares being canceled in the past, leaving us fans hanging onto hope that this third attempt will indeed be the charm.

Maybe the third time’s the charm.

It seems that a small team at Blizzard Entertainment is believed to be developing a StarCraft shooter game, according to reports from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who shared this information during an interview for IGN’s Podcast Unlocked about his upcoming book, “Play Nice: The Evolution, Decline, and Potential Revival of Blizzard Entertainment.

In his book, Schreier details that after the cancellation of Blizzard’s survival game following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, the majority of the team responsible was let go. A small group persisted, and under the guidance of experienced developer Dan Hay, who has worked on Ubisoft’s Far Cry series in the past, they are currently nurturing a StarCraft-themed shooter project.

In a chat with IGN, Schreier mentions that the current project they’re working on is still in its initial stages, and Blizzard has previously abandoned two attempts at creating a StarCraft first-person shooter. These include the well-known aborted project, StarCraft: Ghost, and the less-famous Ares. Schreier’s book delves into numerous tales and events spanning Blizzard’s entire history, with this particular story being just a minor part of it.

The StarCraft universe is ripe with potential

Although StarCraft plays a crucial role within the Blizzard Entertainment franchise, there is still significant potential for further exploration that remains untapped.

In recent times, StarCraft has taken a backseat as Blizzard Entertainment focused on projects like Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. However, it’s been in the spotlight again lately, with Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer announcing during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2024 that both StarCraft Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection will become available on PC Game Pass on November 5, 2024.

As a diehard StarCraft enthusiast, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the release of this shooter game. With numerous studios specializing in first and third-person shooters within the Xbox family, there’s no shortage of skill to help bring this project to life, should it require assistance. In its initial stages, it seems we won’t be hearing much about this project for a while.
