Death in Paradise fans crown Ghosts favourite show’s best ever guest star

As a seasoned fan of Death in Paradise and someone who’s seen more episodes than I care to admit, I can confidently say that Mathew Baynton’s performance as Colin Babcock in the 2021 Christmas special was truly outstanding! It’s not every day you see a guest star steal the show like he did.

In the shifting of main detectives on the series Death in Paradise this year, let’s rewind and appreciate some of its most memorable guest actors. Fans have weighed in with their favorites, as expressed in a unique survey.

The poll received more than 1,000 votes, with viewers choosing their favourite from a selection of the show’s most memorable guest faces.

In a clear victory, it was none other than Mathew Baynton, famously known for his role as Ghosts’ character Mathew Baynton (Colin Babcock in the 2021 Christmas special), who emerged triumphant in the survey.

Baynton scored 18 per cent of the vote, while the runner-up, Chelsea Edge, who played Rebecca Wanslow/Sophie Chambers across multiple episodes, scored 14 per cent.

1st place went to someone, 2nd place went to another person, but Steve Edge finished third as Freddie Archer with 13% of the votes, followed closely by Sean Maguire in fourth place as Marlon Collins with 11%, and Kate O’Flynn in fifth place as Izzy Parker with 10%.

Beyond the top five contestants, here’s how the rankings continued: Helen Baxendale ranked sixth under her alternate names Helen Reid or Sasha Moore with an 8% share, Colin Salmon followed closely in seventh as either Leon Hamilton or Vincent Carter also earning 8%, and Jaye Griffiths rounded out the top eight with a 5% vote count as DI Karen Flitcroft.

In the end, Lucky Clayborn, portrayed by Kate Robbins, secured the ninth spot with a 5% share of votes, whereas Don Gilet, a former guest star known for his Andre Morgan role, finished in tenth place with 4% of the total votes cast.

Actor Gilet is set to return to Death in Paradise, taking on the role of Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson. This character hails from London and is initially not enthused about the picturesque island of Saint Marie where he’s been transferred.

Previously, Gilet expressed his feelings about taking up the lead detective role in Death in Paradise after Ralf Little, saying it was “as if I’ve been given an exceptionally cherished and priceless gem to hold.

This large-scale production resonates deeply with its audience, and the affection for it continues to expand. I strive to always remember this and continue feeling thankful, humbled, and committed.

Despite challenging situations that urge me to abandon the scene and plunge into a body of water, whether it’s a pool, the sea, or a cold drink – whatever is most accessible in the moment.

At Christmas, Death in Paradise is set to make its comeback, and you can catch up on past episodes by streaming them on BBC iPlayer.
