DC’s Absolute Universe reimagines the classic world with a fresh start. Unlike the usual DC setting, this universe hasn’t had a long history of established heroes protecting it. That changes with a new generation, including iconic figures like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. These heroes are challenging the corrupt powers that control everything and inspiring a heroic uprising. They’ve each been fighting this battle alone, opposed by the powerful and villainous Absolute Justice League who want to keep things as they are – but that’s about to change.
Issue #15 of Absolute Wonder Woman marked the first team-up between characters from the Absolute line, pairing Wonder Woman with Batman to investigate a series of murders connected to the goddess Hecate. This story is a thrilling adventure that highlights the heroes’ contrasting styles and demonstrates how vital they both are. More importantly, it reveals a key difference between the Absolute Universe and the main DC Universe: while Superman is the central figure in the Prime Universe, Wonder Woman holds that position in the Absolute Universe, and this issue powerfully confirms it.
An Absolute Team Up
The trouble started with Joker and Veronica Cale plotting to get rid of their enemies – including the increasingly popular heroes. Just as Batman was dealing with criminals, a huge Bat symbol magically appeared in the sky. He traced it to Wonder Woman, who introduced herself. Though Batman was initially wary, he quickly realized he could trust her. Wonder Woman explained she was investigating a series of murders in Gotham linked to Hecate, and since Batman was the city’s detective, she hoped he’d help.
Wonder Woman and Batman investigated the latest murder, and Wonder Woman quickly realized it was a setup designed to lure her into a trap. The victims were missing various body parts, leading Wonder Woman to believe someone was trying to build a golem. Following clues discovered by Batman, the heroes found an abandoned church in Slaughter Swamp and broke inside, discovering a group of witches performing a ritual. The ritual wasn’t about creating a golem, but about controlling Wonder Woman herself.
Wonder Woman, under someone else’s control, attacked Batman and nearly killed him. Luckily, he was able to use an item she’d given him when they first met, which freed the real Diana from the control. They both escaped just as the building exploded. After getting to safety, Diana revealed she knew Bruce Wayne’s name, sharing a brief, connecting moment. Standing in the snow, Wonder Woman proposed they team up again, handing Batman a flash drive containing information about other heroes. She explained that saving the world would require them to work together, perfectly illustrating her heroic nature.
The Absolute Symbol of Teamwork
Wonder Woman has remained remarkably true to her original character compared to other heroes. Even with a difficult upbringing, she consistently champions peace and defends humanity with compassion. She possesses a unique ability to see the larger context, recognizing the world’s flaws and corrupt influences without allowing them to diminish her hope or erode her trust. More than any other hero, she leads with love and fully embodies the spirit of heroism. Understanding the importance of collaboration, Wonder Woman helped Batman connect with the other Absolute heroes, recognizing that they’re stronger together.
Wonder Woman has become the inspiring leader the world needs. While Superman deals with heavy responsibilities and Batman operates as a lone rebel, many heroes are still focused on simply surviving. Despite their personal struggles, Wonder Woman is actively building a team, offering hope to the public and becoming a central figure for all the heroes. She’s the first true superhero in this universe, and she’s uniting everyone, helping them evolve from fighters into something more.
