Following the announcement of the death of the Good Times actor at the age of 84, his daughter, Shannon Amos, expressed her tribute and shared a glimpse into how she received the news about his demise.
I’m at a loss for words… Sadly, our family has been struck by the tragic news that my dear father, John Allen Amos, Jr., passed away on August 21st,” Shannon, aged 58, wrote in the caption of an Instagram video showing us dancing together. “We are heartbroken and left with numerous unanswered questions about his passing, which we only learned about through the media, just like many of you.
Despite it being a period for remembering and rejoicing in his life, we’re finding it challenging to deal with the tumult of feelings and doubts about his departure,” she went on. “Nevertheless, I find a measure of tranquility in understanding that my father has now been set free.
It was later discovered, based on a death certificate obtained by TMZ, that the actor died from congestive heart failure.
John’s youngest son, Kelly Christopher “K.C.” Amos – one of his two children with former wife Noel Michelson – confirmed the death of the West Wing alum in a statement issued on October 1st. The cause of death was natural causes. However, in recent years, there have been disagreements between the siblings regarding the care of their elderly father.
By the end of 2023, Shannon alleged that her older brother K.C., aged 54, was guilty of elder abuse. She claimed that he deliberately kept their father away from the rest of the family and his close associates.
Shannon explained to The Hollywood Reporter that this situation didn’t just influence me, but it also touched his grandkids, his nieces, colleagues he’s collaborated with, and friends who have been part of his life for many years.
Additionally, she claimed that K.C. falsely represented himself as their father during interactions, neglected his health concerns, mismanaged his funds, and took advantage of his inheritance. However, K.C. refuted these charges when approached by the media.
Previously in the same year, Shannon announced allegations of elder abuse against her brother. She had set up a GoFundMe campaign to gather funds for legal costs, long-term care, future medical treatments, and expenses related to their father’s hospitalization in another state. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, John made a video denying Shannon’s accusations, leading her to remove the GoFundMe page.
In July 2023, a month following her public accusations, K.C. was apprehended in New Jersey. According to his statement to THR, “She claimed that she had contacted the police 24 times against me, eventually leading to my arrest in New Jersey, although Shannon asserted the number was overstated.
In the wake of his arrest, K.C. said he cut off communication with Shannon. That case is ongoing.

Regarding John, he too tackled the allegations and denied any instances of abuse. He shared with THR that he adores his daughter and finds her exceptionally intelligent. In essence, he believes that she has good intentions, despite possibly approaching things in an inappropriate manner.
