As a child of the 60’s and 70’s, I can vividly remember the thrill of watching Thunderbirds every week. The adventures of International Rescue and their high-tech equipment were nothing short of magical to me. So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about the discovery of never-before-seen footage from this iconic series!
Remarkable, long-lost recordings from the classic television series Thunderbirds have been uncovered in a backyard storage in Berkshire. It is anticipated that viewers will be able to enjoy this previously unseen footage for the series’ 60th anniversary celebration next year.
22 film containers filled with recordings from the show, which had been sealed against light, were found among the belongings of a series editor who passed away not long ago, by his family.
The video material has been handed over to Stephen La Rivière of Century 21 Films, who reported that most of the cans hold footage from the 1960s Thunderbirds era. This includes a previously unbroadcast version of an episode, which until now, remained untouched by daylight.
According to La Rivière, the BBC, the cans’ poor state made identification challenging, yet it was evident that most of them were related to Thunderbirds.
Delving into the painstakingly slow digital scan of the footage, I unearthed a fascinating discovery: while most of it mirrored what was already aired, an intriguing alternate cut caught my eye.
“Eventually, listening one night… this one played out and it was not the same as broadcast,” La Rivière said.
As a film buff, I’m eagerly looking forward to the potential unveiling of restored footage from the classic series, “Thunderbirds,” which will mark its 60th anniversary next year. Fingers crossed for some restoration magic to make it viewable for all of us!
On September 30, 1965, the initial episode of Thunderbirds was broadcasted, chronicling the thrilling escapades of the humanitarian organization known as International Rescue.
The team used a range of high-tech equipment to carry out their rescues, including the Thunderbirds – advanced craft for travelling across land, sea, air and space.
The iconic series was filmed between 1964 and 1966 using electronic marionette puppetry. Other iconic Anderson productions included Stingray, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and Joe 90.
