As a dedicated film enthusiast putting words to paper, I can’t help but share my excitement over the recent turn of events in EastEnders. This week, none other than Joe Wicks, played by Paul Nicholls, resurfaced after a 27-year hiatus, making an unexpected appearance on our screens through a video call to his father, David Wicks, portrayed masterfully by Michael French.

For several years, Joe and David would find themselves drifting apart only to reconcile again at times. It was evident that David felt quite emotional during their recent conversation, as he arranged a visit to see both Joe and his daughter, Holly (Chloe Marshall).

Despite the recent jubilant turn of events, you might find yourself curious about Joe’s past, considering his extended absence from our screens. So, let me fill you in on some details about Joe’s history in Walford and what transpired during those missing years.

Continue reading to explore Joe’s past, recalling the hardships he faced, secure in the belief that – from what we gather – he’s currently experiencing better days.

What happened to Joe Wicks in EastEnders?

1996 saw Joe, who was then mourning the loss of his sister Karen, make his way to Albert Square in search of their father, David. Tragically, Karen had passed away in a car accident following an argument with Joe, while he himself had only suffered minor injuries at the time. Initially, David showed no interest in Joe, but this changed when Joe left and eventually returned home, prompting David to become more involved in his son’s life.

Joe relocated to London alongside his mother Lorraine (Jacqueline Leonard). However, the sorrow over the loss of Karen continued to haunt Joe, as he harbored self-blame for her demise due to a disagreement between them concerning who would sit in the front seat. Unfortunately, it was Karen who was seated at the back when a truck collided with their car. Over time, this tragedy led Joe to suffer from schizophrenia, and his actions grew progressively unusual.

Instead of taking his own life, he gathered news stories about extraterrestrials, and stored a deceased cat inside a box in his room. However, eventually, he chose to address his mental health concerns by seeking professional help.

In the heart of the Square, I found myself smitten by Sarah Hills (Daniela Denby-Ashe). We grew closer and even got engaged. However, a brief romance with my second cousin, Mary Flaherty (Melanie Clark Pullen), made me question my readiness for marriage. Ultimately, I decided to reconsider our plans.

1997 saw Joe and Lorraine returning to Bolton, and it was revealed later on that he managed to mend fences with Sarah, many years following their separation.

In 2012, when David paid a visit to his mother Pat Evans, who was gravely ill (Pam St Clement), he disclosed that Joe was involved with a woman who already had kids.

For a period, David resided with them, but it seems their friendship with Joe deteriorated again. Later on, David shared with Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) that he had lost touch with Joe and was unaware of his current residence.

Now that their relationship has been mended, it seems David gets another opportunity to strengthen his bond with Joe. In the midst of all the tumult and turmoil on EastEnders, this bit of joy is a refreshing treat for the show’s enthusiasts.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
