In response to the resounding success of the romantic comedy “The Idea of You,” where Anne Hathaway portrayed a single mother falling for a younger boybander, played by Nicholas Galitzine, an Amazon executive was inquired about the potential for a sequel.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, mentioned to Variety in an interview published on October 10 that “Perhaps!” They are actively working with director Michael Showalter – who isn’t female but did an exceptional job portraying a very female story – and they view him as a potential collaborator for future projects within the romantic comedy genre.
Indeed, she attributed the movie, originating from Robinne Lee’s novel of the same title and rumored to be influenced by Harry Styles, as a significant factor in the company’s expansion of content aimed at women.

As a dedicated fan, I eagerly await news about the possible sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada” from 2006, with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt set to return. However, there’s been no update on Anne Hathaway’s involvement yet. During our reunion at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards, she shared with TopMob News that a continuation of our story might not be in the cards after all.

The film adaptation of “The Devil Wears Prada” was being planned before the book was even published. A rough draft of the first 100 pages and an outline, based on author Lauren Weisberger’s brief tenure as assistant to editor-in-chief Anna Wintour at Vogue, were enough to convince Fox executives to buy the rights. “I was the first person to read it at Fox 2000,” the studio’s former executive vice president Carla Hacken told Variety in 2016. “I thought Miranda Priestly was one of the most compelling villains ever. I remember we moved quickly to acquire it.
The adaptation commenced prior to the 2003 publication of the New York Times bestseller, but after four writers had attempted to develop a direct narrative. Later, Aline Brosh McKenna was assigned the job of creating a fresh script centered around the sacrifices women make to advance in the editorial ranks at fashion magazines. “I completed a draft rather swiftly – it took me approximately a month,” McKenna shared with the outlet. “Subsequently, I rewrote it based on everyone’s feedback.
2. The legends surrounding Anna Wintour posed numerous challenges during the production phase. As McKenna shared with Entertainment Weekly about her research, “I faced immense difficulties finding individuals in the fashion industry who were willing to speak with me, as people were terrified of Anna and Vogue, fearing repercussions.” Only one person was brave enough to engage in conversation, whose identity I’ll never reveal, who said, “The characters in this film are overly friendly. No one in that world is that friendly. They don’t need to be, and they don’t have the time for it.” Consequently, I made revisions to make everyone seem more rushed and less friendly.
In an admission to Entertainment Weekly, director David Frankel found it challenging to secure locations due to Wintour’s extensive influence. He explained, “The Met Ball caused the Metropolitan Museum to distance itself from us.” Additionally, Bryant Park, which was then hosting New York Fashion Week for a long time, was also unavailable.
He mentioned that even the renowned apartment buildings we considered for Miranda’s apartment, the co-op boards refused our application. In the end, they secured a five-story townhouse on the Upper East Side from a friend of producer Wendy Finerman to use instead.

However, they managed to nail one aspect perfectly – our only interaction with Vogue was with the production designer, Jess Gonchor, who secretly visited their offices to examine Anna’s workspace, as Frankel shared with Entertainment Weekly. Legendary costume designer Patricia Field gracefully made an entrance, skillfully curating a collection of approximately 150 pieces from designers like Donna Karan, Zac Posen, Rick Owens, and yes, Prada. She meticulously ensured that Meryl Streep’s character Miranda Priestly was distinctly differentiated from Anna Wintour. As Streep humorously recalled, “She borrowed everything; we had to be very cautious not to eat spaghetti at lunch as it might stain and they wouldn’t be able to return it!
5. And Wintour shows at least a hint of humor regarding the situation. In an interview for Vogue’s 125th anniversary issue, Streep discussed her portrayal of Wintour’s late friend Katherine Graham in the 2017 film The Post. In her own words, “There was no attempt to shy away from the ugly parts of her, and it was the truly terrifying aspects that resonated most because she didn’t try to win people over, which is often a tactic women use when they want their way—something my friend Carrie Fisher used to refer to as ‘the squeezy and tilty.’ [Miranda] didn’t employ any of that.
8. In a manner reminiscent of Miranda Priestly, Streep chose to assert herself before taking on the role. Although she had already earned two Oscars and an additional eleven nominations by then, Streep hadn’t yet perfected the skill of negotiating for higher pay. However, this time, she decided to voice her concerns.
She clarified to Variety that the initial offer, while not necessarily insulting or accurately representing her worth to the project, felt somewhat inadequate. 10. Anne Hathaway had to put in more effort for her role compared to Andy, who found it easier with Miranda. Granted, not an extreme difference, but as she shared on RuPaul’s Drag Race, “I was the ninth choice for The Devil Wears Prada.
Even though Hathaway didn’t have to audition, she had to exercise patience. Moreover, she went as far as creating a persuasive message in the sand of Hacken’s zen garden, urging him to hire her. When she eventually received the good news, Hathaway was in her room getting dressed. Upon hearing it, she exclaimed excitedly, “I got The Devil Wears Prada! 11. Fortunately for Hathaway, the executives’ preferred option declined their offer on multiple occasions. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Frankel revealed that Rachel McAdams was approached three times for the role. At the time, McAdams was filming Fox’s “The Family Stone” and had just finished working on “Mean Girls” and “The Notebook.” McAdams declined the offer as she wasn’t keen on starring in another mainstream movie. Frankel stated that the studio was insistent on having McAdams, but she was resolute about not taking on the role.
Meryl Streep’s performance in Brokeback Mountain (the 2005 Oscar winner) alongside Anne Hathaway significantly contributed to the casting of Hathaway in The Princess Diaries. As Frankel reminisced, “Meryl watched that scene from the film,” she met with her and phoned Tom Rothman at Fox, expressing her belief that they would make a good pair and would work well together.
12. Finding the right actress to play Emily proved to be quite a task. Frankel observed over a hundred women try out for Miranda’s stern personal assistant (notably including Tracie Thoms, who later re-auditioned for the role of Lily, Andy’s best friend), but it was the low-key dressed Emily Blunt that stood out to him.
While Emily Blunt was auditioning for a role in the 2006 fantasy film “Eragon” on the Fox studio lot, a casting agent asked her to try out for “The Devil Wears Prada”. However, she was hurrying to catch a flight and recalled feeling somewhat flustered. On “The Late Late Show” in May 2021, she shared that she read the script while wearing sweatpants, which didn’t fit the part at all.
A few days had passed, and Blunt was still rueing over not getting a role in Eragon. That’s when Frankel phoned her. “I was at some seedy club in London,” Blunt explained to Variety. “I called him back from the restroom. He said, ‘Hey, I would have cast you based on the tape, but the studio wants to see you once more. Can you reprise your performance, but dress the part this time?’
13. She perfectly fit the role. Initially, Emily was intended to be an American character, but when screenwriter McKenna listened to Blunt deliver her sharp wit with a British accent, they decided to modify the script to include more British phrases, as McKenna explained to Entertainment Weekly.
In another instance, Blunt acknowledges taking inspiration from a harried mother she encountered during filming. She recounted on The Howard Stern Show, “I guess I borrow things from people I meet… While making that film, I saw a mom talking to her child in a supermarket. A line she said has since become famous. She scolded her kid and made a gesture with her hand, saying, ‘Yeah, I’m listening to this, and I want to hear this.’ I incorporated it into the movie.
14. Apart from his acting role in Runway, Stanley Tucci was instrumental in penning some memorable lines as well. After a long search for an ideal actor to play Nigel, the art director, Tucci took up the part at the last minute as stated in EW. He then expertly delivered Nigel’s dry wit and even improvised many of the character’s most famous quotes.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Tucci commented on his favorite moment, which is when Miranda enters the office for the first time and everyone seems to panic. This scene had us all in stitches, with David constantly providing lines for me to say. The line that made it into the final cut was “Gird your loins.” Tucci also mentioned a rejected line, “‘Tits in!'” He came up with this one himself and we laughed every time it was said. 15. It’s no surprise that his most cherished keepsake from the movie is his family. In fact, Tucci became close enough with his costar Blunt to be invited to her 2010 wedding to John Krasinski. It was there that he rekindled a relationship with Felicity Blunt, whom he later married in 2012. The couple has since welcomed children named Matteo and Emilia into their family.
However, as Tucci shared with People, it was at the film’s 2006 premiere where he first met his future spouse. At that point, he was still married to his late wife, Kate Tucci, who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. “I finished the movie, and she began her treatments,” he described. “Then came the premiere, and she lived for another four years after that.” He added, “Interestingly enough, Felicity – Emily’s sister – my wife, spoke to Kate at the premiere that night, and I have a photo of them together, which seems quite strange.
16. Similar to Hathaway, Thoms vividly recalls the specific instance when she learned she would portray Lily, as it happened on her 30th birthday in August 2005. 17. Thomas recalls observing Adrian Grenier, who was at the pinnacle of his popularity from the TV show Entourage, being swarmed by fans and gracefully handling every autograph request by distributing copies of his indie-folk band The Honey Brothers’ CD instead.
Thoms observed that Grenier, playing Nate, Andy’s boyfriend, took the chance to highlight his bandmates, as he wasn’t the lead singer of the band. He admired how thoughtful Grenier was in recognizing everyone individually and valuing their backing, then reciprocating that support towards his fellow band members.
18. Though Thoms found the entire experience exhilarating, saying “It felt like we were starring in Sex and the City, although we weren’t, but there was a definite New York, sophisticated, mature vibe,” she admits to having one lingering disappointment.
She had a definite plan for the Marc Jacobs bag that Lily (and Thoms) salivated over in one key scene. “I asked the prop department to not show me the purse before we were rolling, because I wanted the reaction to be genuine,” she said. “That, like, gasping and grabbing and ‘Gimme, gimme!’, that happened because that purse was gorgeous.”
She confessed to TopMob News, “The bag was so appealing, I had an entire plan to ensure it didn’t leave my side. However, the part where I’d accidentally forget the purse in my trailer and have a reason to return to work was eliminated from the script. Thus, I never returned to get the purse, which was quite unfortunate.
19. (In my role as a dedicated follower) I, surprisingly, wasn’t the one who ventured to Paris. Initially, it seemed no one was planning to traverse to the radiant City of Light to shoot the concluding scenes for Miranda and Andy’s grand expedition to Paris Fashion Week. However, my astonishment soon turned into determination when I managed to compile a captivating preview during filming, which eventually persuaded the studio to launch the movie as a summer blockbuster with an expanded budget. Hathaway and Simon Baker (in the role of Christian, her other romantic interest) traveled to France for a couple of days of filming, while Streep shot her scenes in New York City due to budget constraints making it excessively expensive for her to travel.
20. In reality, Streep regretted missing out on much of the enjoyment. Choosing to fully embody her Miranda character and largely avoid any set-related camaraderie was a dreadful decision for her, as she later confessed to Entertainment Weekly. “I could hear them all laughing and having fun,” she lamented. “I was so miserable! I said, ‘This is the price you pay for being the boss!’ That’s the last time I ever tried a Method approach!
