Sister Wives’ Christine, Janelle Reveal “Hardest” Part of Their Splits

Sister Wives' Christine, Janelle Reveal "Hardest" Part of Their Splits

As a child of divorced parents, I can empathize with Robyn’s situation. It’s heartbreaking to see a parent struggling to maintain a relationship with their adult children. However, it seems Kody is dealing with some deep-seated anger that needs to be addressed before he can make amends.

For several years now, the Brown family has been going through a period that Kody Brown, their leader, has termed a “internal conflict” or “family feud.

The group known as the Sister Wives has experienced a split, following Kody’s separation from three out of his four wives, namely Christine Brown, Janelle Brown, and Meri Brown. Only Robyn Brown, along with her five children, are still part of the family at this time.

Due to some of Kody’s older children accusing him of favoring Robyn and her children over them, causing their mothers to be single again, the bonds between Robyn’s children and several of the other kids have grown strained or distant.

Janelle expressed regret during her exclusive interview with TopMob News, stating, ‘I’m sad about the rift that occurred.’ She also shared her hope that one day, ‘that bond might mend again.’

In the year 2014, when Kody officially tied the knot with Robyn, he became their legal guardian for the three kids – Dayton, Aurora, and Breanna. Alongside them, they have two more children together, Solomon, aged 13, and Ariella who is 8 years old.

Janelle mentioned that their daughter, Madison Brush, had contacted Robyn’s children, expressing, “We attended a family gathering, and I believe that Maddie made a genuine attempt to greet Aurora – Robyn’s eldest child – with a warm embrace. Thus, I’m optimistically hoping that in some time to come, our relationship might be mended.

Christine, who has six children with Kody as well, concurred, expressing her hope that things would improve. She mentioned that the hardest part about all the separations for her was seeing how the kids no longer had a strong bond with Robyn’s children. She found this deeply saddening because they had shared so many wonderful memories together and it was a source of much joy.

In 2021, Christine decided to part ways with Kody, stating that he showed undue preference towards Robyn and had grown distant from her eldest kids as the main causes of their separation.

Regarding Janelle, she parted ways with her ex-polygamist partner in 2022, expressing her primary concern as the strained connection between Kody and their children. Similarly, Meri split from Kody not long after, following a prolonged period of estrangement.

Despite the turbulence in Robyn and Kody’s relationship, as depicted this season on Sister Wives, Christine and Janelle remain untroubled about their future together.

Christine remarked about her former partner, “Three divorces in such a short time must surely take a heavy toll on him.” She continued, “With that many marriages ending so quickly, it’s clear that there are some issues they need to address. It undoubtedly alters one’s personal identity. However, I have no doubt they’re managing. In fact, I suspect things will work out well for them in the end.

Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.

Kody Brown expressed his readiness to separate from his first wife, Meri Brown, not long after they exchanged vows in 1990. However, according to Meri, Kody made her think that he would try to improve their relationship by saying, “Meri, when we move to Flagstaff, this will be an opportunity for us to start anew.” This is a reference to their relocation in 2018. “He often led me to believe such things,” Meri continued. “This is not the first time he’s done this; he has been doing it for many years.

She expressed her primary concern as his poor communication, including his true feelings, desires, dislikes, and the narrative he has been presenting for a long time.

Kody admitted that his actions might have sent conflicting signals, but as he began to focus on tasks, he found himself questioning the logic behind them. He clarified, “I wouldn’t pursue a relationship with her at this point.

Either way, Meri’s friends were thrilled when she finally pulled the plug in early 2023.

In a heartfelt revelation, I admitted, “They’ve finally realized that I need them, that they’re here to back me up. It’s long overdue!” Now, with my blinders removed, I see clearly that he had been trying to guide me towards leaving for years, subtly suggesting he didn’t cherish me as deeply as I thought. “If he could make me depart and I do, then he’s not the villain because he didn’t run away.

Several years had passed since the family acquired a 14-acre plot of land in Flagstaff, Ariz., intended for construction. In the season opener, Kody admitted that he was prepared to let the dream of building there fade away. With the full purchase price of $820,000 still unpaid (a debt reportedly settled in 2023), he expressed to his remaining wife, Robyn Brown, “I’d almost prefer to abandon it or sell it and then begin anew somewhere else.

As for Robyn, “I can’t talk about that,” she responded. “That is so not where I’m at.”

In an earlier conversation with TopMob News, Janelle Brown expressed that their relationship had been gradually drifting apart. However, it was ultimately Kody’s shortcomings in his role as a parent to some of their children that led her to decide to part ways.

“The decisive moment for me was when his relationship with my kids deteriorated, and it didn’t appear he would go to great lengths to mend it. This realization made me understand that this was the main factor keeping me here.

In my fervent enthusiasm, I’d put it like this: That was the account I offered up, a devoted fan might say, for why I hadn’t been giving my all to bridge the gaps that had formed between me and some of my grown children.

In the Sept. 15 episode, he expressed his sense of not belonging in the family anymore, despite being legally married to Robyn and co-parenting their five children: Dayton Brown, Aurora Brown, Breanna Brown, Solomon Brown, and Ariella Brown. He also mentioned having occasional relationships with some other kids but found it hard to navigate the situation. Consequently, he was left wondering how to handle it all, as it didn’t feel like a traditional family dynamic.

Although they’ve been genuinely monogamous for the first time in their 14-year marriage, Robyn admitted in the season 19 premiere that things have been particularly challenging between them. “It’s been a struggle,” she said. “Kody doesn’t know who to hold accountable – himself or one of the other wives. He feels rejected, and I think he’s worried I might reject him too.

In the flow of my daily life, I find myself constantly vigilant, ensuring that our bond isn’t being undermined. The most challenging aspect? Navigating the complexities of being married to a man who is going through multiple divorces – there seems to be a lack of resources or guidance on this unique situation.

Meanwhile, Kody was grappling with a loss of self-confidence, expressing, “I find it hard to face my reflection and tell myself, ‘Hey there, pal. I adore you.’

Sister Wives' Christine, Janelle Reveal "Hardest" Part of Their Splits

Include Madison, Janelle’s oldest child, in the list of children who are currently estranged from Kody. As Janelle clarified during the premiere, Maddie hasn’t had any contact with her father. Neither has contacted each other, and they don’t have a relationship at present. In essence, she has disconnected herself from both him and Robin.

Janelle stated that the concern lies in Kody not fully engaging in a relationship with Maddie’s children Axel, Evangalynn, and Josephine. She expressed that she believes he should only have contact with them if he is willing to make a firm commitment towards it.

In that September 22 broadcast, it was revealed that my beloved Kody seemed to sever our connection with Maddie and her spouse, Caleb Brush, whose sibling was bonded to Kody’s brother. This communication breakdown occurred as our family unit began to crumble significantly.

Without Kody being around or reaching out, Maddie has taken on a very protective role, as Janelle put it. She feels it’s best for their situation if he remains absent from their lives until he can be reliable and consistent without adding unnecessary drama, according to her.

Additionally, Robyn mentioned that she’s been urging Kody to take steps to reconcile, but she also expressed, “It seems appropriate for the children to do the same as well.

Currently, it appears that Kody isn’t inclined to mend the rift. He often complains that their conversations are more about spreading gossip, which he finds tiresome.

During their 32nd anniversary celebration, Meri confided in her friend Brandi that Kody had hinted he never truly loved her and felt pressured to marry her. In response, Meri said, “‘Kody,’ I said, ‘I know you cared for me.’

And if he didn’t, the mom to Leon Brown said in a confessional, why did he ever choose to propose?

“When a young man meets a woman who’s also single, why would he decide to marry her if he doesn’t feel genuine affection for her? It seems unfair and heartless to select someone from a group of potential partners, only to say ‘I’ll try to make myself fall in love with you over the next three decades.’

In his private reflection, Kody stated: “Well, Meri is airing some allegations. She can certainly say what she pleases. I won’t be responding to them.

Despite being unsure whether to develop Coyote Pass or just sell it, Janelle realized that the first move was to settle the Arizona property debt. As Kody refused to discuss the matter with her, she confided in ex-sister wife Christine Brown on September 22 episode, “I believe I’ll need a lawyer.” She added, “Because I think that’s the only way I can possibly get any kind of resolution from him.

Janelle admitted that since she doesn’t have a legally binding marriage with Kody, she has no legal grounds to assert any claims on his property. In her words, “It’s not as simple as calling a lawyer and filing for divorce. The situation is complex because there’s no legal marriage in place.

Kody’s reason for avoiding discussions with Janelle regarding the Arizona property was because he had lost trust in her.

He assured in a private moment during the September 22 broadcast that he would settle the property when necessary, and he was unwilling to share any specifics about his actions or plans because he’s grown weary of sharing details that get twisted and spread by the rumor mill within our fractured family.

A bit of a pot calling the kettle black, Janelle said in her own interview.

She confided, “He seems to spill secrets as if he were a colander, sharing intimate details about his past relationships and multiple spouses that left me feeling it wasn’t appropriate for him to disclose such information to me.

In days when their affection for each other was growing instead of dwindling, they would combine their resources into a common fund.

Janelle clarified during the September 22 broadcast, “We would pool all our resources to assist one individual, and then we’d unite to back the other. This was our practice for quite some time until the past decade or so. But now, it seems like everyone is focused on building their own estate rather than helping each other.

When Robyn found herself needing a house in Arizona, everyone chipped in to purchase her luxurious five-bedroom property, valued at approximately $1.65 million, which had been on the market since August.

Initially, Robyn mentioned that acquiring the asset would benefit the family. However, when Janelle proposed that everyone should be on the mortgage, she was turned down. Kody stated, “‘No, no, we have to safeguard, understandably protect Robyn’s inheritance,'” Janelle recollected. Now, since she’s leaving the family, Janelle expressed her desire to receive her share of the Coyote Pass profits and also recover the money she invested in Robyn’s house.

But that could be a tough sell.

Robyn remarked, “After all this time collaborating, it seems perplexing to me when Janelle mentions owing her money. I can’t seem to wrap my head around the calculations or logic behind it.

Sister Wives' Christine, Janelle Reveal "Hardest" Part of Their Splits

Discussing their financial struggles with Coyote Pass, Janelle expressed her frustration as she felt Kody was hiding behind numerous debts. Meanwhile, she’s noticed him acquiring other assets such as trailers and home decorations. She pointed out the art in Robyn and Kody’s house and stated that they have plenty of items, just like she has spent money on her own things too. In response, Kody explained that most of his cash went towards purchasing cars (“I basically had a fleet”) and insurance for their children.

As a dedicated follower, I’d often find myself taken aback by the elegance of Robyn’s backyard. It was meticulously completed with every detail in place. Additionally, there was always an abundance of items at her house that left me marveling, “Wow… really?

Essentially, she expressed that he didn’t give importance to her needs or desires, which eventually led to her exhaustion. Over time, even her grown-up kids became increasingly frustrated, expressing their discontent with statements like, “Mom, what is going on?

In a nutshell, Robyn became quite cautious when managing her finances following the breakdown of her first marriage.

She confided during the September 22 episode that she wasn’t particularly skilled with finances in the past. Growing up, she encountered many financial hardships, and it was only through her divorce that she learned to manage her funds effectively and carefully budget herself. Regarding her sister wives, she commented that they likely prioritized their spending differently than she did, which is all there is to it.

In the recent episode on September 22, I, as a lifestyle expert, shared my observations, and it became apparent that while Christine and I, along with our children Aspyn Brown, Mykelti Brown Padron, Paedon Brown, Gwendlyn Brown, Ysabel Brown, and Truely Brown, frequently gather together, there seems to be no communication or interaction happening between us and Meri, Robyn, or Kody at the moment. I find it challenging to envision this situation changing significantly in the near future.

Speaking about the period when they had four homes on a single cul-de-sac in Las Vegas, Kody described it as “the best time of my life.” He explained that everything was running smoothly and he enjoyed having Maddie and Caleb around. He also mentioned his affection for Caleb, stating that he felt like family towards him.

However, discord arose in Arizona regarding coronavirus safety measures, and things began to unravel. Similarly, when his marriages crumbled, he lamented that his connections with the children deteriorated too: “This simply led to all those ties becoming bitter.

But Christine insisted their were issues well before she announced she was leaving in late 2021.

On the September 22nd show, she remarked, “The kids who seemed frustrated had been feeling that way well before I departed. My departure didn’t alter their relationship with him; Kody has the ability to mend his relationships with his children.

Though it’ll definitely take some work.

Kody expressed his frustration, saying he’s still struggling with how he’s been unfairly treated. The point is, he’s not ready to accept responsibility for things that his wife or ex-wife are accusing him of. He’s hoping that one day the resentment will fade and we can find our way back to forgiveness and love.

At the age of 21 and 19, when Kody married Meri, they weren’t particularly well-acquainted, either spiritually or legally. They later filed for divorce in 2014, allowing Kody to legally adopt Robyn’s three oldest children from a previous relationship.

Kody shared that when we got married, she seemed quite different and now he realizes there might have been some past issues (or baggage) that Meri had which I wasn’t aware of. Initially, I thought I could cope with it, but as time passed, everything turned into arguments. He expressed that he can’t continue living in a situation where she is frequently upset with him.

Despite his desire to depart, Kody explained that due to their plural marriage arrangement, he couldn’t ask for a divorce. It was against the rules, so he found himself stuck in the relationship. Simultaneously, he didn’t yearn to abandon the relationship entirely. Instead, he sought answers about whether they could salvage and repair it.

Due to the conflicting signals, he admitted that Meri believed they could resolve their issues. However, every time they met up, Kody explained, “She wasn’t pleasant, she wasn’t entertaining, she wasn’t compassionate, she wasn’t engaging. I’m trying to find her intriguing, but I’m growing tired instead.

He acknowledged that it might seem as though Meri was left behind, but he clarified, “However, it wasn’t a case of me evicting her. In fact, it was Christine, Janelle, and Meri themselves who decided for me to move out from our shared home.

Although Janelle and Christine believed that since their union with Kody wasn’t officially recognized as a legal marriage, Meri intended to seek a formal separation from their church, which is referred to as a “release.

In the Sept 22 episode, she clarified that all four of us married Kody through our church. However, since we can’t all have legal marriages, it was more of a spiritual commitment or covenant. Since we’re not planning on moving forward with any formal marriage and I don’t wish to be bound to him forever if he doesn’t want me, I believe it’s best to end this spiritual union. And at this point, I feel it’s appropriate for us to completely part ways.

Kody hesitated to embrace the notion, as expressed, since he didn’t wish to recognize or submit to the leadership of the church officials.

Kody put it this way: “The harm was so extensive that there’s no way we can make up again, regardless of the circumstances.” He further stated, “Therefore, I don’t wish to answer to this church for its nonsense. So, I plan to let Meri handle her own affairs because if I’m resentful towards her, it turns into a battle. And honestly, I just want her to leave because it took her so long to understand that things between us are settled and over for quite some time.

2021 holiday gift exchange conversation turned sour for the 18 Brown children. As Christine explained, “Things took a turn for the worse, things unraveled.” Kody, Robyn, and their kids stood on one side, choosing to distance themselves from Janelle, me, and our kids. The rift occurred following this text conversation thread, resulting in a division.

According to Robyn, her older children expressed that the interaction felt uncomfortable for them and they desired some distance in their relationship. However, it wasn’t a matter of not wanting to see or interact with her again; rather, it was more along the lines of “This has become unpleasant.” She emphasized this point firmly.

Aurora emphasized that she was repeatedly informed, from various situations by numerous individuals, that she wasn’t welcomed into the family when her mother married Kody in 2010. She said they never considered her as a sibling and never saw her in that role.

Her sister Breanna stated that she believed the parents could have made more efforts to bring our family closer together, but unfortunately, this connection never materialized.

But Christine isn’t sure how they could have opened their arms any wider.

Robyn’s children and Robyn are always welcome to attend anything,” she emphasized. “In other words, feel free to drop by our home whenever you please.

Speaking as an ardent admirer, I must say that it’s no secret that Ysabel Brown was quite fond of Robyn’s children. In fact, Mykelti Brown Padron resided with them for a while! Even in the tough times when my kids felt exasperated, they never wavered in viewing Robyn’s offspring as their brothers and sisters, bound by the same sibling love.

Speaking enthusiastically about plural marriages, Janelle expressed her viewpoint as follows: “When it works well, plural marriage offers an extraordinary family structure that I’m a part of, a close-knit community where I belong. I have a husband who I share a wonderful bond with, and I retain my independence at the same time. In essence, for me, plural marriage is a fantastic setup.

Sister Wives' Christine, Janelle Reveal "Hardest" Part of Their Splits

According to Janelle, Kody found it more challenging to distribute his affection when the family moved from Las Vegas to Arizona in 2018.

In the September 29th episode, it was noted that when Kody relocated to Flagstaff, he found it more manageable to stay away. Occasionally, I had to remind him of our standing arrangement to visit my house. He’d often make excuses about being tired, but I would tell him, “You can rest just as well at my place as you can at Robyn’s.

Janelle asserted that her children felt distinct from Robyn because they were disciplined if they dared to open her refrigerator. On the other hand, for Christine’s kids, the problem stemmed from noticing that Robyn and their father were a couple, but he wasn’t present in their household.

And Robyn said her crew definitely felt the divide.

She mentioned that Meri was warm and welcoming towards my children and me, but the rest of the family found it difficult to embrace us. All we desired was to become a part of their family, she said on the September 29th episode.

Sister Wives' Christine, Janelle Reveal "Hardest" Part of Their Splits

During a September 29 episode, Kody revealed how moving between four homes impacted his eighteen children, particularly an incident involving his and Robyn’s youngest daughter, Ariella, born in January 2016. In this instance, Ariella became very attached to him when he attempted to leave, holding tightly onto his leg.

Kody said, “‘I told her, ‘There’s another woman who needs me, another mother. I have other children who need to see me,'” expressing the difficulty of his situation. “She clung to me, crying, ‘Don’t abandon me, Daddy, don’t leave me.’ It was tough,” he added.

Unfortunately, that’s just a reality of plural marriage, insisted Janelle.

Ever since day one,” I’ve shared, my kids have been aware that their father wouldn’t always be around. It’s always struck me as mismanaged, Kody and Robyn’s approach with her children. He couldn’t bear to be gone for more than three or four days because Ari gets so downhearted. I can’t help but feel this was less than optimal parenting. Throughout our family history, the other kids have handled it, and they’ve grown into well-adjusted adults.

Among the not many young adults with the last name Brown, Mykelti maintained a strong bond with both Robyn and Kody, as well as Christine and Janelle. During Kody’s divorces, Mykelti stepped into the role of mediator to keep peace among them.

Ever since Robyn joined the Brown clan, Mykelti welcomed her so warmly that she included her in the delivery room during the birth of her twin boys, Archer and Ace, in November 2022.

During the September 29th episode, Mykelti shared that when Robyn became part of our family, she was still trying to understand myself. Robyn made me feel unique and understood. She was present when I needed someone. She was there for me when I needed someone to listen, to care for me.

Christine’s mother was overjoyed beyond words. As Robyn joined the family and it was clear she and Mykelti shared a strong bond, Christine expressed her feelings, saying, “It’s exactly what I had hoped for.” On the Oct. 6 episode, she continued, “When I dreamt of having a multi-wife family, I prayed that my children would form close relationships with other mothers. And that’s precisely what’s happening here.

Sister Wives' Christine, Janelle Reveal "Hardest" Part of Their Splits

As an ardent admirer, let me rephrase it for you: I, Kody, believe they’re intentionally keeping me at arm’s length in their lives, as if to mete out punishment for a crime I didn’t perpetrate. During the October 6 episode, I shared my perspective on my estrangement from some of my older children. I’m merely accused because I failed to develop an all-consuming love for their mothers.

What’s more, he continued, he think his former spouses are a bit to blame.

He mentioned that the strain in his relationship with his kids is predominantly a mental issue for him, stemming from the negative chatter. Essentially, he suggested that the emotional turmoil resulting from the family breaking apart has led to a thought process of, “Well, let’s place the blame on Dad. He must have made the mistakes.

However, though some responsibility can be attributed to him, he strongly dislikes the insults. In particular, he admitted to finding it challenging to relate with Hunter, Maddie, and Gabriel. Kody confessed that one of his children replied to a text message by saying, “You are worthless. I would never talk to you again regardless.

In another occurrence, he expressed to the cameras, “One of my children recently said, ‘You’re behaving badly. I won’t speak to you anymore. You’ve deceived me and influenced me unfairly.’

He mentioned that he’s reluctant to continue taking care of the issue himself because it involves dealing with venomous matters. He stated, “I can’t keep reaching out indefinitely,” expressing his belief that his elders should take a more active role in resolving things. He added, “I’m ready to make an effort, but someone else needs to step up and reciprocate the effort as well.

Sister Wives' Christine, Janelle Reveal "Hardest" Part of Their Splits

For Robyn, watching Kody’s estrangement from his adult children hit far too close to home.

In her Oct. 6 appearance, she shared that when she was young, her parents divorced. This meant her father lived with another woman in a different city, while her mother lived on her own. She recalled asking him why he wasn’t around during her childhood, only to receive weak explanations that didn’t satisfy her. It was a painful experience for her.

Instead of letting Kody’s wounded feelings hinder his efforts, she made it clear that she found it challenging to not feel a slight decrease in her respect for him, as expressed during their heated confrontation captured on camera towards the end of 2022.

Although Kody admitted that he might need to make more efforts to repair his relationships with his children, he emphasized that healing his own heart is a necessary step first.

He expressed his frustration by stating, “Some of my children seem to be conspiring against me. I’m so enraged about the situation that when I interact with them, I fear they might accuse me, which could further agitate me and potentially make things worse. At this moment, I’m too emotional and may unintentionally cause more problems.

Sister Wives' Christine, Janelle Reveal "Hardest" Part of Their Splits

Despite attending a wedding as a family in late 2022, they didn’t seem to be experiencing genuine affection towards each other.

In the October 6th episode, Kody voiced his concern to Robyn, stating that he noticed Madison hurriedly leaving him with her children, which he found unusual. He mentioned that his daughter had not shared the news about expecting their third child, Josephine, who was born in February 2023, and this was something he hadn’t known. In other words, he said Madison didn’t inform him she was pregnant.

Frankly, Maddie doesn’t tell her dad much of anything with the two rarely speaking.

Janelle clarified that Maddie has no relationship with Kody due to her strong protective instincts over her children. Since Evie was born, about three-and-a-half years ago, Kody hasn’t been present. Janelle didn’t want him to suddenly appear at the wedding and surprise the kids by claiming to be their grandfather without them recognizing him.

Kody expressed that it’s impractical to expect grandparents to be constantly involved in their grandchildren’s lives, considering the distance and personal commitments. This is based on Maddie’s location in North Carolina, while he resides in Flagstaff.
