  • During the October 2024 Xbox Partner Preview, developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment and publisher Krafton revealed Subnautica 2.
  • As a full sequel to the original game, Subnautica 2 is bringing co-op support to the underwater survival experience, meaning players can tackle the alien ocean together or with a friend.
  • Subnautica 2 is slated to launch across Xbox Series X|S and Windows via Game Preview and early access at some point in 2025.
  • Subnautica 2 will also be included day one in Xbox Game Pass.

As a seasoned analyst with a penchant for the depths of the ocean and a soft spot for survival games, I must say that Subnautica 2 is like a siren’s call to me. Having spent countless hours immersed in the original game, exploring its alien underwater world in solitude, the prospect of sharing this experience with another adventurer fills me with equal parts anticipation and trepidation.

The deep dark sea is calling.

During the October 2024 Xbox Partner Preview, we had our initial glimpse of Subnautica 2 from developers Unknown Worlds Entertainment and publishers Krafton. The details are scarce, but as usual, players find themselves stranded in a foreign ocean teeming with darkness and colossal sea creatures. However, what sets this apart is the inclusion of co-op play, allowing you to explore the depths alongside a friend. You can view the teaser trailer for Subnautica 2 in the video provided below.

In simple terms, Subnautica 2 will debut with Early Access and Game Preview versions for Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S platforms at launch. This implies that the game will evolve progressively, as the creators incorporate player feedback and refine fresh game elements over time.

At its release, Subnautica 2 is set to join the Xbox Game Pass library too, expanding the collection of both exclusive and non-exclusive games that Xbox players will relish in 2025. This lineup also features titles such as Playground’s RPG Fable in third-person and Remedy’s cooperative spinoff of Control, named FBC: Firebreak.

An ocean of possibilities

Initially released in early access on December 2014, Subnautica is almost a decade old now, with its full release taking place in 2018, about four years after its initial launch.

In the survival genre, Subnautica achieved significant success, with sales surpassing 5 million units by the year 2020. It’s intriguing to consider how co-op support might alter its unique formula, since a key aspect of the initial gameplay was the sense of isolation and tranquility as players navigated the ocean, listening for the sounds of marine life, both friendly and potentially harmful.

Being captivated by the mysteries of the deep ocean and yearning for more underwater terror, I can’t help but express my eagerness to discover what monstrous creatures await us in Subnautica 2. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait much longer to dive in and find out!
