Following Vicarious Visions, Activision’s team responsible for Tony Hawk, merging with Blizzard, fans started to doubt if the third and fourth installments would ever resurface. Luckily, Iron Galaxy stepped up, and though the recent release has garnered positive reviews thus far, a potentially concerning revelation has arisen.
Fans of Birdman have noted that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 features a bin in the new Waterpark map, which houses a trash can and a box resembling the Guitar Hero packaging from Activision’s defunct rhythm IP. Instead of being named Guitar Hero, it seems this fictional game is called ‘Banjo Champion’, but its similarities are undeniable.
As a consequence, Iron Galaxy swiftly extended an apology, acknowledging their deep admiration for anyone involved in game creation. They also announced that the upcoming update would eliminate this issue from the gaming environment. Moreover, they expressed uncertainty about how this oversight occurred within the final version of the game and are now conducting an investigation into the matter.
We deeply appreciate game creators, and we’re currently looking into why that happened. We sincerely thank the community for pointing it out; we plan to take it out in our upcoming update, regarding the game’s environment art.
It’s interesting to note that the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater developer, Neversoft, worked on the Guitar Hero series at one point before shutting down in 2014. This recent revelation has sparked a mixed response across the internet, with some fans expressing disappointment over Iron Galaxy allegedly lacking respect for Neversoft’s legacy, while others have urged them to be mindful of it.
An alternative interpretation, as proposed by Kotaku, is that the secret level could symbolize Neversoft being “pushed away” from the Tony Hawk series to focus on creating Guitar Hero games and assisting with other projects. This same enigmatic title was also present in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2.
The popular Guitar Hero series first appeared on the PlayStation 2 around 2005-2006, and the latest installment was Guitar Hero Live, available on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in 2015. Keep an eye out for any important updates regarding this series or future updates for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4; we’ll be sure to share them with you.
