Even though we’re only halfway through the 2020s, this decade is already proving to be a fantastic one for horror movies. Films like Talk to Me, The Black Phone, Barbarian, and His House have been both creative and popular, signaling a new peak for the genre. While many of these great horror films are currently available on HBO Max, the streaming service is about to lose two of its best, significantly impacting its horror selection.
If you’re a subscriber to HBO Max and want to watch the first two movies in Ti West’s horror trilogy, you need to do so before the end of the year. X and Pearl will no longer be available to stream after December 31st. X, released in 2022, is a slasher film about a group making an adult movie in Texas. Pearl is also from 2022 and tells the story of how the character Pearl became who she is. Both films star Mia Goth, who plays Pearl and Maxine, a character who survives a violent event and goes to Hollywood in the final movie of the trilogy, MaXXXine, which will remain available on HBO Max.
Ti West’s X Trilogy Is One of the Best Modern Horror Series
The horror genre has seen a strong resurgence lately, and Ti West’s X trilogy is among the most impressive examples. The three films together tell a complex story exploring themes of fame’s darker side, female empowerment and anger, hidden desires, and the impact of past generations, all while celebrating horror movies and filmmaking itself. Each film is a loving homage to a different style of horror and a specific era of cinema: X feels like a gritty, classic 1970s slasher film in the vein of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Pearl draws inspiration from the melodramas of the 1940s like The Wizard of Oz, and MaXXXine evokes the neo-noir thrillers of the 1980s.
The X trilogy isn’t just about typical slasher horror; it’s a deep dive into the minds of its villain and the final girl, where every violent moment serves a purpose. Mia Goth delivers incredible performances in dual roles as Maxine, a rising star, and Pearl, a woman haunted by the past, and the films brilliantly explore how their paths intersect as they both chase fame. Each movie works on its own, but together they create a complete, character-focused story filled with director Ti West’s unique style and meaningful themes.
All three movies in the series have been critically acclaimed on Rotten Tomatoes. X and Pearl are particularly popular with critics, earning scores of 94
Where to Stream X and Pearl After They Leave HBO Max?
As a horror fanatic, I’m really bummed to hear that X and Pearl are leaving HBO Max. It’s going to make completing Ti West’s X trilogy a lot harder! From what I can tell, you won’t be able to stream them anywhere else right now – they’re not on any other major services as of January. So, if you haven’t seen them yet, or want to rewatch, you’ll have to rent or buy them digitally after they’re gone from HBO Max.
