Avengers: Doomsday has the potential to successfully achieve what Deadpool & Wolverine attempted – a truly meaningful team-up. The film will bring together a huge cast of Marvel heroes, including established MCU teams like Sam Wilson’s Avengers and the New Avengers (with the Thunderbolts), as well as newcomers from the X-Men and Fantastic Four. It will also feature heroes from across the Multiverse, uniting them all for the first time. This offers the MCU a second chance to accomplish something it previously aimed for with Deadpool & Wolverine.
The end of Deadpool & Wolverine featured a confusing, though heartfelt, post-credits sequence. However, Avengers: Doomsday now offers an opportunity to properly say goodbye to the X-Men characters from the Fox films.
Avengers: Doomsday Can Finally Say Goodbye to Fox’s X-Men
The movie Deadpool & Wolverine ended with a special set of scenes that resonated with fans of the older X-Men films from Fox. The movie notably featured the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, but from a reality where he blamed himself for the X-Men’s demise. It also brought back other familiar faces like Chris Evans as the Human Torch, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, and Wesley Snipes as Blade. After the credits finished, viewers were treated to a nostalgic look at behind-the-scenes moments from the original Fox X-Men movies.
The tribute to past X-Men actors felt a bit strange, as it seemed like Deadpool & Wolverine was signaling an end to the Fox-era X-Men films. Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine likely contributed to this feeling, but it probably confused fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadpool & Wolverine was released in July 2024, but a year earlier, The Marvels included a post-credit scene hinting at a connection to the Fox X-Men universe, specifically featuring Kelsey Grammer as Beast.
The recent announcement that the X-Men will appear in Avengers: Doomsday makes this earlier tribute to the X-Men seem a bit premature. It’s odd that Marvel created this tribute knowing the original actors – like James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen – are set to reprise their roles in 2026. Still, the tribute was a nice gesture, and now Marvel can properly conclude the story of the Fox X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday, giving those characters a fitting farewell on the big screen.
How Will Marvel Eliminate Fox’s X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday?

A major concern with how the X-Men might be written off in Avengers: Doomsday is that it could be a very grim and violent event. Killing off popular X-Men characters from the previous films wouldn’t feel right alongside a heartwarming tribute like the one in Deadpool & Wolverine. That movie earned a happy goodbye, but Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be much darker, making a celebratory montage feel inappropriate.
Marvel has announced that the X-Men will be central to its future films after Avengers: Secret Wars. However, these won’t be the same X-Men fans remember from the previous movies. Marvel intends to introduce a new team of heroes, meaning iconic mutants like Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, Cyclops, and Beast likely won’t survive. With Doctor Doom set to destroy Earth and create Battleworld, the original X-Men will probably be killed off or removed from the timeline.
After the dramatic ending of Avengers: Doomsday, which echoed the impact of Avengers: Infinity War, the post-credits scene in Deadpool & Wolverine felt like a touching goodbye to the X-Men. This sets the stage for Avengers: Doomsday to potentially give the X-Men a heroic and memorable final stand.
