As a cinephile who has spent countless hours watching chess matches unfold on screens both big and small, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming series, Chess Masters. With a lineup that includes the witty and insightful Sue Perkins at the helm, accompanied by the formidable trio of David Howell and Anthony Mathurin providing expert analysis, this show promises to be a must-watch for chess enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
After quite a wait, avid chess enthusiasts can finally rejoice as a fresh, exciting tournament series featuring top-tier players from across the nation squaring off is making its way back onto television screens!
The series titled “Chess Masters” is set to debut on BBC Two and iPlayer next year, with a lineup of well-known personalities as hosts.
In the upcoming series, Sue Perkins, a talented presenter and comedian, will be in charge. Offering insightful comments will be David Howell, a three-time British chess champion and grandmaster, along with Anthony Mathurin, an expert chess coach who has previously starred on The Traitors.
In the second season of “The Traitors”, Anthony made a significant impact among both the Faithfuls and the Traitors. Many suspected him due to his extensive background in chess, which they believed could be employed for deceit.
Well, now he’ll be putting his know-how to good use in this brand new role and we cannot wait.
Upon the unveiling of the show, Perkins expressed his thrill, stating, “It’s absolutely fantastic to be the host for Chess Masters! Twelve gifted amateurs from various parts of Britain will face off against each other, engaging in the timeless game of chess.
“It’s all about psychology, strategy, smart thinking, and nerves of steel. Chess that is, not my job (which usually involves the opposite). I’m there to help us understand what’s going on in the players’ heads and make sense of what’s happening on the board.
For more than three decades, we’ve eagerly anticipated the return of chess on our television sets. The arrival of Chess Masters promises to make this long-awaited moment truly rewarding.
According to Perkins, it’s been over three decades since chess graced our television screens, as The Master Game was broadcast from 1976 until 1983.
Acclaimed for its groundbreaking nature during its debut, the BBC show featured as host Jeremy James, with Leonard Barden and later, Bill Hartston contributing their expertise in analysis.
Mathurin expressed his feelings about his part in the series by saying, “I’m thrilled beyond belief and can hardly wait to explore and delve into the intense mental struggle of high-stakes chess, with an element of surprise thrown in. Game on!
The upcoming program consists of eight installments, where twelve competitors demonstrate their chess abilities through various preliminary matches and elimination stages. Ultimately, only one champion will be recognized after the final round.
Initially ordered at the beginning of 2024, the anticipation for this series grows even more as the host team has been officially announced.
Chess Masters will be coming to BBC Two and iPlayer next year.
