As a big horror fan, I’ve always loved The Howling. It’s a werewolf movie directed by Joe Dante – the guy who did Gremlins – and it was seriously ahead of its time with the special effects. Rob Bottin did amazing work, and the on-screen transformations were groundbreaking for the era. It’s based on a novel from 1977 and follows a news reporter, played by Dee Wallace, who stumbles upon a hidden community of werewolves. While it didn’t make a huge amount of money when it first came out – around $17.9 million – it’s become a real cult favorite over the years. The cast was great too, with Dee Wallace leading the way alongside Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, Christopher Stone, Belinda Balaski, and Kevin McCarthy.
