Each character you can play in Elden Ring: Nightreign has unique abilities, attacks, items, and a personal questline called the Remembrance Quest. This quest unfolds in chapters recorded in your in-game Journal, requiring you to interact with other characters and achieve individual goals.
The Forsaken Hollows expansion adds two new characters and with them, two new questlines to discover. This guide provides a complete walkthrough of the Scholar’s Remembrance Quest in Elden Ring: Nightreign, detailing each chapter and the steps to complete it.
If you’re looking for help with The Undertaker’s quest, here it is.
How To Complete Scholar’s Side Quest
You can begin the Scholar’s Remembrance Quest right away after unlocking the character. To start it, you’ll first need to defeat Gladius, who is the initial Nightlord boss available. We’ve put together a guide with helpful tips to help you succeed.
Chapter 1 And Chapter 2
The game starts with missions involving Scholar, where you need to simply participate in expeditions. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose – just play until you earn Memory Fragments when you return to the Roundtable Hold.
You’ll see a Memory Fragment notification in the bottom-right corner of the screen when you return to the main hub. If you’re worried you skipped it, you can always find it in your Journal – just flip through the pages to the latest active chapter.
Chapter 3
Begin recalling memories by checking the Journal, then head to the chapel in Roundtable Hold. You’ll find The Undertaker there as well.
When you enter the room, turn right and look at the desk covered in papers. Carefully check the papers, and specifically read the one labeled “Tear.” This will give you a personal goal to work towards. Next, you’ll need to begin either the Balancers or the Dreglord expeditions – you can do this on your own or with up to two other players.
Okay, so here’s the deal with expeditions: you don’t actually need to complete them to get rewards! What you need to do is find the place marked with an orange flag on your map. It’s different every time you start a new expedition, so make sure you check your map before you go running off anywhere. Seriously, check the map!
It’s best to start by clearing out the camp, gaining a level, and then heading to the first area. Having allies with you is helpful, but you can also skip enemies and go straight to the objective if you prefer.
I needed to explore a dungeon on the eastern side of the map. Inside, I had to locate a room containing both a ladder and a hole in the floor. Climbing down the hole led to a desk with some books and an item called the Vassal’s Journal, which I could collect.
Complete the expedition – be careful, as the first boss can defeat you quickly if you’re playing solo. Once finished, return to the chapel. You’ll find Undertaker strangely licking something purple off the wall! Talk to her, then try to exit the room and speak to the NPC blocking the doorway. Go back to Undertaker, and she’ll express her gratitude. Finally, ask her for a favor to finish this part of the game.
Chapter 4
Just play with Scholar until you earn a new Memory Fragment.
Chapter 5
Open your Journal and go to chapter five to begin the Remembrance. You’ll need to talk to the Small Jar, who will transport you to the northern keep – a castle located on the DLC map. Once there, make your way to the top floor and find the room containing a large, ice-covered rock. Climb onto the rock, then climb up to the platform above it, and look for a hole in one of the walls.
Once you reach level 8, you’ll be strong enough to handle enemies, but you can still choose to avoid any optional fights you prefer, only tackling the battles you absolutely have to.
Walk forward, interact with the door, and then return. You’ll encounter some enemies along the way. Check out our Scholar build guide to learn the fundamentals of the character and find helpful relic suggestions.
After completing that task, go back to the locked door – you should now be able to open it. Once inside, examine the desk, and then speak to the character who is trapped inside a crystal.
Finish the Remembrance, and you’ll earn the Cleansing Tear relic as a reward.
Chapter 6 And Chapter 7
Keep playing Expeditions with Scholar until you collect enough Memory Fragments to unlock the last chapter.
Chapter 8
Okay, so for the final part, I need to double-check the Journal. Then I have to start the Remembrance, and most importantly, talk to the Undertaker in the chapel. After that, I’ve got to head to the garb room and check out the mirror. Finally, I need to go back to my desk in the chapel and have a look at it.

Your final personal goal is to defeat Traitorous Straighess during the Dreglord expedition.

After finishing that step, you’ll get the Headband of the Golden Ones. Then, return to the Roundtable Hold and talk to the Undertaker to finish the quest.
Rewards For Completing Scholar’s Side Quest
After completing the final chapter, you’ll receive the “My Dear Successor” note, which improves your Ally skills. You’ll also unlock the Scholar’s Remembrance skin. If you haven’t defeated The Dreglord yet, you’ll get the Night of the Dregs relic, which is particularly effective for attacks and spells that inflict Rot.
