Mark Strong Reveals Similarities Between Dune: Prophecy Character and The Penguin’s Carmine Falcone

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for epic narratives and captivating characters, I must say that Mark Strong has truly outdone himself this time around. His portrayal of Emperor Javicco Corrino in “Dune Prophecy” is nothing short of mesmerizing, and his performance as Carmine Falcone on “The Penguin” was equally impressive.

Mark Strong is currently experiencing a succession of notable roles, as he’s been featured in consecutive HBO series dramas: “The Penguin” and “Dune Prophecy.” In “The Penguin,” Strong portrayed mob boss Carmine Falcone, while his first appearance on the small screen as Emperor Javicco Corrino occurred this past Sunday. Before the premiere, Strong spoke with Comicbook.com about the difficulty of embodying a powerful leader and the intriguing similarities between these two characters.

In simpler terms, Strong stated that they share the fact that they are both at an advanced age and have gained a level of influence or authority, which leads to them being cast as powerful characters. However, these two characters don’t share many other similarities. Interestingly, Falcone is markedly confident and self-assured, making him intimidating due to his control over everything.

The emperor’s position is not nearly as secure, as you can tell in Strong’s performance. He continued: “Corrino should be that way. He should be somebody controlling the world that he’s in, with an ability that allows him to take care of all of his enemies and really make sure that everything’s ticking over as it should be, but he isn’t. He’s the classic example of somebody who’s inherited power without having done anything to achieve it, so he’s ridden with guilt, insecurity, paranoia, and doesn’t really have the means to be able to exercise the power that he has. Unlike Carmine Falcone.”

In a single episode of “The Penguin”, Strong made an appearance, but he has a significant role in “Dune Prophecy”. It’s evident that he will play a key part as the story unfolds. The emperor finds himself in a precarious position amidst conflicting political factions, such as The Sisterhood (who will eventually evolve into the Bene Gesserit), the influential Great Houses, the economic might of Spice, and the intrigues of his wife and daughter.

Who is Emperor Javicco Corrino?

The narrative unfolds following a war between humans and artificial intelligence, famously referred to as the “Butlerian Jihad” within the Dune universe’s timeline. This event is relatively recent, causing the empire’s political and economic unity to be still in its infancy, leaving Emperor Corrino apprehensive due to the fragility of his position. Despite his awareness of the precarious circumstances he finds himself in, he appears indecisive and seemingly lacking the necessary tools for effective resistance. This series is based on the prequel trilogy Great School of Dune, but it offers a flexible interpretation. In the source material, Javicco Corrino is a young boy who does not ascend to the throne during the story, yet his character shares similarities with Emperor Salvador Corrino from the books, suggesting that names have been rearranged.

There’s a wealth of mysteries to explore in this series, and it’s even more intriguing because the show isn’t strictly adhering to the books. Tune in for Dune Prophecy every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max. You can also grab a copy of the novels in print, digital, or audiobook formats right now.
