Prime Video Just Added Alexander Skarsgård’s Action Movie Flop

Look, Alexander Skarsgård is having a moment. From the epic The Northman to the bizarre Infinity Pool, and with the perfectly-rated Pillion just released, he’s been in some fantastic films. He’s got a lot coming up too, with projects like The Moment and The Wolf Will Tear Your Immaculate Hands promising more great work. But digging a little deeper, I stumbled upon a movie he made about ten years ago – and honestly, it didn’t land. It’s currently streaming on Prime Video, but with a dismal 36

Before becoming known for roles like James Steward in Long Shot and Nathan Lind in Godzilla vs. Kong, Alexander Skarsgård played Tarzan in the 2016 action film The Legend of Tarzan, directed by David Yates. The movie, which also features Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Djimon Hounsou, and Christoph Waltz, became available on Prime Video on December 30th. Though it received negative reviews, the film is set ten years after Tarzan has left the jungle for Victorian England and follows his return to investigate reports of slavery.

The Legend of Tarzan Is One of Alexander Skarsgård’s Lowest-Rated Movies

Despite featuring a famous cast and being based on the well-known story of Tarzan, the movie The Legend of Tarzan was poorly received by critics. It currently has a low 36

Despite strong performances from its talented cast, a beautiful score, and lots of action, The Legend of Tarzan was ultimately let down by a confusing and overly complicated story, unconvincing special effects, and a clumsy attempt to address the issue of colonialism. Marija Djurovic of Cairo360 found the film “unnecessarily complex and generally lacking in excitement,” and Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian quipped that it “looks like a two-hour Neutrogena commercial.” Rosie Fletcher from Digital Spy observed that the movie “tries to be all things to all people but fails to do the one thing it really needs to: tell the story of Tarzan.”

Despite receiving negative reviews from most critics and only lukewarm reception from viewers, The Legend of Tarzan still managed to earn a decent profit in theaters. It made $356 million worldwide on a budget of $180 million. The film also performed well on streaming, briefly reaching the Top 10 on Netflix last year. It remains to be seen if it will achieve similar results on Prime Video.

What’s New on Prime Video?

Prime Video had a strong December, adding a variety of movies and shows to its lineup. Before the end of the month, viewers could enjoy titles like The Legend of Tarzan, Sinners, A Minecraft Movie, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), and Zombieland. For TV fans, all 15 seasons of Supernatural became available, along with Season 2 of Fallout, which released new episodes every Wednesday.
