The Green Lantern Corps is the DC Universe’s main force for keeping the peace, with members spread throughout the galaxy. Many humans, like Hal Jordan and Sojourner Mullein, have proven themselves worthy of becoming Green Lanterns, using powerful rings to combat evil on Earth and throughout space. Given the large number of Green Lanterns, it’s no surprise they’ve faced a huge array of frightening enemies – from common criminals with superpowers to members of other Lantern groups. Some of these villains haven’t gotten the attention they deserve, but they possess incredible abilities and compelling stories that make them worthy opponents for the Green Lanterns.
The Green Lantern Corps constantly fights incredibly powerful enemies that threaten the entire universe, relying on their immense willpower to succeed. Here are some of the most overlooked villains faced by those who’ve been Green Lanterns.
5) Scar

The Anti-Monitor severely injured Scar, one of the Guardians of the Universe, exposing her to the evil influence of the dark god Nekron. Under Nekron’s control, Scar became a traitor, working to destroy the Green Lantern Corps and ultimately setting the stage for the Blackest Night prophecy – a future where the undead Black Lantern Corps would rise. She cleverly caused conflict between the various Lantern Corps, weakening the defenses of Oa, the Green Lanterns’ home world. When Nekron and the Black Lanterns finally appeared, intent on spreading death across the universe, Scar locked up the other Guardians. It ultimately took seven powerful Lanterns, each representing a different Corps, to defeat her and stop the events of Blackest Night from fully unfolding.
4) Rankorr

John Moore, known as Rankorr, was one of the earliest humans to join the Red Lantern Corps, a group fueled by intense anger. His brother attempted to get justice for their grandfather’s murder, but was killed by corrupt police officers while Moore could only watch. This event, combined with Moore’s self-loathing, led to him being chosen by a Red Lantern Ring. Unlike most Red Lanterns, Rankorr has managed to maintain his sanity and can even create energy constructs, similar to Green Lanterns. He’s a particularly powerful and frightening member of the Red Lanterns, and a tragic figure in their ongoing conflict with the Green Lantern Corps.
3) Major Disaster

Paul Broker, better known as Major Disaster, started as a small-time criminal who used hired scientists to build devices that could create natural disasters. But after being around these weapons for a long time, he gained his own superpowers – the ability to control chance and cause massive destruction, like exploding pipelines and hurricanes. This made him a recurring foe of Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. Surprisingly, Major Disaster has genuinely tried to change his ways and become a hero, even briefly joining the Justice League. Ultimately, he returned to villainy to provide for his daughter. This internal conflict and difficult past make him a fascinating and complex character.
2) Kryb

The Sinestro Corps recruits members based on their ability to inspire fear, and Kryb is arguably their most terrifying. This sadistic killer travels the galaxy targeting and murdering married Green Lanterns who have children. She then kidnaps the orphaned babies, carrying them in a cage-like pouch on her back. Kryb believes she’s rescuing these children from abusive parents and intends to raise them to fight against the Green Lantern Corps. She also creates a mind-control substance that forces others to obey her. With a disturbing personality and frightening appearance, Kryb represents the ultimate nightmare for any Green Lantern.
1) Doctor Polaris

Doctor Polaris, also known as Neal Emerson, is DC Comics’ take on a character similar to Magneto. He’s a dangerously unstable villain with incredible control over magnetism, and a major threat to the Green Lanterns. Emerson gained his powers while working with magnets, allowing him to mentally manipulate magnetic fields. This also triggered a sinister split personality, becoming the evil Doctor Polaris. He’s capable of massive feats, like shifting the Earth’s magnetic poles, pulling structures out of orbit, and even controlling the iron in people’s blood. Doctor Polaris has become a formidable enemy to Green Lanterns such as Hal Jordan, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz. His unique abilities and internal struggle make him a compelling villain who deserves to be featured in more stories.
