28 Years Later, George Clooney Mocks His Infamous Nippled Batsuit

If you ask people about movies that temporarily derailed a successful series, Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin often comes up – and it’s not just a coincidence that the film involves ice! Even George Clooney, who played Batman in the 1997 movie, has been critical of it, calling it embarrassing and admitting he wasn’t happy with his own performance. However, he’s now able to look back on the film with some amusement and can even laugh about it, though he doesn’t necessarily love it.

I recently saw an interview with George Clooney where he was reminiscing about his career, and it was so fun! They started with ‘Batman & Robin,’ and honestly, it’s great to see he can finally laugh about it – especially after all these years. He even joked about that Batsuit and the, uh, distinctive nipples! It’s cool to see him in such a playful mood about a movie that’s become a bit of a cult classic.

How Does Clooney Feel About His Bat-adventure All These Years Later?

Like most “Know Their Lines” videos, Variety began with an easy question. When asked about the line, “This is why Superman works alone,” the Ocean’s Eleven star jokingly revealed it wasn’t actually from a Superman movie, but from Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Clooney, still playfully joking, insisted he was the best Batman. He jokingly pointed out the often-overlooked detail of Batman’s nipples, adding with humor, “How do you think he feeds the baby bats?” He then firmly stated he didn’t want to hear any further debate on the subject, reiterating his claim to the title.

He then explained that filming Batman & Robin wasn’t a pleasant experience, mainly because of the Batman suit. It was incredibly uncomfortable and restricted his movement. He described lying on a board while director Joel Schumacher would give him direction through a microphone and speaker, dramatically setting the scene – like, ‘George, your parents are dead, you have nothing to live for, and action!’ They’d lift him up, he’d deliver the line ‘I’m Batman,’ and immediately after, they’d lower him back down and carry him off on the board.

Look, George Clooney has always been open about how much of a challenge Batman & Robin was. But lately, he seems to be able to talk about it with a bit of humor, which is great. It’s pretty much the same vibe he had when he spoke with Entertainment Tonight last year, not long after making a quick cameo as Batman again in The Flash. He’s definitely reached a point where he can laugh about the whole experience, and that’s refreshing to see.

When questioned about reprising the role, the actor jokingly stated he’d need an impossible amount of drugs to consider it. According to Vanity Fair, back in 2021, he’d already said he felt he’d done such a poor job with his one superhero film that he’d been barred from the set. He even admitted he won’t let his wife, Amal Clooney, or their children watch the movie, explaining he wants to maintain some respect in their eyes. He joked that it would be tough if his kids told him they didn’t like it, saying that could be really hurtful.

It’s great that he can enjoy the movie with its fans, who see it as a lighthearted and enjoyable bit of fun. However, don’t expect to see him reprise the role in James Gunn’s DC Universe anytime soon.
