Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi, has shared his thoughts on the Star Wars series that he might be tasked with creating, or possibly continue working on, for Lucasfilm in the future.
Previously, Rian Johnson helmed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which premiered by Lucasfilm in 2017. Approximately a month before this film’s debut, it was disclosed that Johnson would additionally pen a fresh trilogy of Star Wars movies, unrelated to the central narrative thread from earlier installments in the series.
Originally planned to helm the first film of the trilogy, Johnson instead chose to work on Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion (2022), due in part to the backlash from The Last Jedi’s release and its subsequent online debates. Now, he has a third Knives Out movie, titled Wake Up Dead Man, set for Netflix premiere this year.
Since the announcement of the Star Wars trilogy several years ago, there hasn’t been much information released about it. As a result, fans are curious to know if Rian Johnson’s future Star Wars projects are still in development.
What did Rian Johnson say about his Star Wars trilogy?
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson mentioned that “there was no significant progress” regarding the discussions about the trilogy.
As a movie enthusiast who collaborated wonderfully with Lucasfilm on a previous project, I found myself in the fortunate position of being asked to continue our creative journey together. With a hearty “Yes!” echoing through my mind, I bounced ideas off Kathy, which eventually led to the birth of Knives Out. Since then, I’ve been immersed in an exhilarating whirlwind of murder mystery filmmaking. If opportunities arise for further Star Wars adventures or new projects in the future, I would jump at the chance. But for now, I’m contentedly focused on my current endeavors and enjoying every moment of it.
Although there’s no indication that updates regarding Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy are imminent, enthusiasts of his creations can anticipate the release of “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” set for December 12, 2025.
