Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the Stranger Things season 5 finale.
After nine seasons, the popular show Stranger Things has concluded with its final episode, “The Rightside Up.”
In the final episode, the terrifying Abyss started to engulf Hawkins, confirming the group’s suspicions. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her sister Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) confronted their brother, who was revealed to be Henry/Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
At the same time, Max and Holly tried to escape again, and the group finally finished their Dungeons & Dragons game.
So, you’ve finished Stranger Things and you’re feeling that Hawkins-sized hole in your life? I get it. While you’re mourning the end, I’ve put together a list of 10 other incredible series you might love. But first, let’s dive into everything that happened in the season 5 finale – spoiler alert, obviously!
Stranger Things season 5 ending explained: What really happened to Eleven and did she die?
Similar to her agreement with Kali in the previous volume, and following the final battle in Hawkins, Eleven appeared to sacrifice herself by remaining as the Upside Down collapsed. However, there’s a possibility that wasn’t the complete picture.
As the episode closes, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max wrap up their Dungeons & Dragons game. Mike then uses a comparison from the game to hint that Eleven could still be alive.
He believes that Kali had a change of heart after seeing the love and support Eleven received from her friends and family. As she was dying, Kali used her powers to hide Eleven and create an illusion of her in the Upside Down. This illusion made it appear as though Eleven had sacrificed herself, allowing the real Eleven to escape without being seen.

No one knows Eleven’s current location, but Mike believes she’s somewhere far away. We then see her walking through peaceful, scenic hills, seemingly alone and content.
I’m not sure if Mike is just wishing things were different and trying to convince himself Eleven is still out there. The creators haven’t actually said what really happened, which is kind of cool, honestly. It feels like they’re letting us, the fans, decide the story ourselves, just like when we’re all playing Dungeons & Dragons together!
But Ross Duffer did add to Tudum that “she lives on in their hearts, whether that’s real or not”.
What happened to Vecna?
Vecna, also known as Henry, was defeated after being weakened by Eleven and Kali. Will found the courage to confront his fears and gain control over Vecna, which allowed Eleven to finally destroy his physical form by sending him through a spire.
The decisive moment arrives when Joyce (Winona Ryder) confronts him, fiercely warning that he’s targeted the wrong people. She grabs an axe and decisively ends Vecna’s life, finally putting an end to years of terror.
Ross Duffer explained to Tudum that they ultimately decided Joyce needed to be the one to take action because she was the first character, back in Season 1, to recognize something was wrong and actively try to do something about it.
During one part of the episode, Henry seems like he might be able to change sides, but he ultimately stays loyal to the Mind Flayer. Will tries to reason with Henry, pointing out that he’s also being controlled and urging him to join their fight against the Mind Flayer.

Henry refuses to listen to reason, and explains to Will that the Mind Flayer never actually controlled him. He insists he always had the power to fight it, but deliberately chose to side with the creature instead.
Ross Duffer explained to Tudum that the show deliberately leaves it ambiguous whether young Henry willingly made the choices he did, or if he was entirely controlled by the Mind Flayer from the start. The interpretation is left up to the audience.
Honestly, when it comes down to it, Henry’s whole journey doesn’t really matter. It all leads to him siding with the Mind Flayer in the end, which is just… frustrating as a viewer. It kind of makes everything feel pointless!
What happened to the Upside Down?
Just as they intended, Murray and Hopper worked together to detonate a bomb, destroying the gateway between worlds after the kids were safe from Vecna.
With Prince’s Purple Rain playing, the timer reached zero, and the wormhole closed, finally bringing an end to the years of hardship for the people of Hawkins.

Following a major showdown in the Upside Down, it’s discovered that the source of all the children’s captivity – the Pain Tree – is actually the Mind Flayer itself. The group lures the Mind Flayer with Nancy as bait, launching an attack from the ground to weaken it while Eleven battles Henry within the creature’s body.
Why was Henry so afraid of the briefcase?
Henry discovered a rock inside the scientist’s briefcase, and it was filled with particles from the Mind Flayer, which then took control of him.
Watching Henry’s story unfold was heartbreaking. It was the moment everything changed for him – he lost his joy, his innocence, and the life he’d always known. It was truly the moment he transformed into the terrifying Vecna we now know, and it was devastating to witness.
Where did our heroes end up?
At the end of the episode, the group goes their separate ways. Will, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Max all graduate from Hawkins High – Dustin delivers a memorable valedictorian speech that would have pleased Eddie Munson, and they each begin their lives after graduation, heading off to college and beyond.
Jonathan is filming a movie with an anti-capitalist theme, while Steve is busy coaching kids’ baseball. Robin is a student at Smith College, and Nancy has left Emerson College to work at the Boston Herald. Though they’re all pursuing different paths, the four friends still make an effort to get together monthly.

Okay, so I have to admit, I was genuinely thrilled to see Joyce and Hopper finally get their moment. It’s so rewarding after everything they’ve been through! Hopper gets a job offer in Montauk – a sweet little Easter egg for longtime fans who remember the show’s original title – and then, he pops the question! They get engaged and share a beautiful dance to Etta James’s ‘At Last.’ Honestly, it was a perfect, feel-good ending for those two, and I was all smiles.
Now that things have calmed down in Hawkins, Mike and his friends finish their adventure and go upstairs. But as they do, they see Holly and her friends running down to the basement, ready to start a new one.
You can watch all five seasons of Stranger Things on Netflix now. Plus, a new story called Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85 will be released on Netflix in 2026.
