As a long-time Pokémon enthusiast who has spent countless hours traversing the various regions and capturing every little critter, I must admit that the concept of “Mini Pokémon” piques my interest. The idea of these diminutive creatures helping out in battles and assisting with item finding is a unique twist that could have added an exciting dynamic to the gameplay experience.
In the process of developing each new generation of Pokemon, the team at Game Freak often brainstorms numerous ideas that don’t ultimately make it to the final game. Some of these unused ideas are revisited and implemented later on, while others remain unrealized. Over the past few weeks, several abandoned concepts have been revealed, with the latest one reportedly intended for Pokemon Sun and Moon. As per a recent leak from Centro Leaks, it appears that the developers had been exploring the possibility of including “Mini Pokemon,” which would be smaller creatures that trainers could discover in the Alola region.
One captivating aspect of Mini Pokemon is that players wouldn’t have been able to capture them conventionally. Instead, they could assist in battles and accompany the player in the overworld. In the overworld, these Mini Pokemon would aid the player by helping them locate items or discover certain Pokemon. Additionally, there were plans for some interactivity with the Poke Finder, a photography feature introduced in Sun and Moon, reminiscent of Pokemon Snap. It seems that Mini Pokemon would help the player identify which Pokemon could be photographed.
Due to The Pokemon Company’s silence on the subject of recent leaks, it remains a mystery as to why Mini Pokemon were excluded from Pokemon Sun and Moon. Nevertheless, there are several possible explanations. For instance, the concept of an entire group of Pokemon that can’t be captured might have been incongruous with the overall narrative of the series. It’s also plausible that integrating Mini Pokemon could have conflicted with the main storyline of Sun and Moon, which heavily featured the Ultra Beasts, rare creatures from different dimensions. Introducing both Mini Pokemon and Ultra Beasts in the same generation might have been deemed too much of a stretch. Additionally, since we already have Baby Pokemon like Pichu and Magby, the Mini Pokemon may have been considered redundant or unnecessary.
Essentially, it appears that The Pokemon Company hasn’t yet discovered a solid reason to launch Mini Pokemon due to the idea being somewhat underdeveloped, as suggested by leaks. However, it’s plausible that Game Freak chose to set aside this concept temporarily in order to create something more substantial and entertaining. Consequently, there’s a chance we might encounter Mini Pokemon at some point, but their appearance is uncertain for now.
As a dedicated Pokémon gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming mainline game in our beloved franchise is none other than “Pokemon Legends: Z-A,” scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch in 2025. While we don’t have an exact date yet, it looks like we might be celebrating a new Pokémon generation around 2026, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of this epic series!
