Production on Season 5 of Stranger Things is complete, and it appears there won’t be a Season 6 – at least, not for now. The recent finale brought the show to an end that was both grand in scale and deeply moving, concluding one of Netflix’s most popular series. While the show itself is finished, the Stranger Things universe will continue with future projects on Netflix. (Please be aware that this contains spoilers for the final episode, “The Rightside Up.”)
The final episodes of Stranger Things successfully defeat both Vecna and the Mind Flayer, and destroy the Upside Down, largely restoring order to things. While the show leaves Eleven’s ultimate fate somewhat unclear, the creators, the Duffer brothers, appear to be intentionally keeping it ambiguous. Although this could have paved the way for a sixth season, the show’s future will explore different storylines.
Why Stranger Things Ended With Season 5

It’s no surprise that Netflix didn’t cancel Stranger Things. The show is incredibly popular, drawing huge viewership and generating a lot of excitement, so Netflix would likely have continued it as long as possible. However, the decision to end the series actually came from the creators, the Duffer Brothers. They announced this back in February 2022, even before the fourth season was released, and shared their reasons in a letter to fans on the show’s official X account.

We originally mapped out the entire story for ‘Stranger Things’ seven years ago, thinking it would take four or five seasons to tell. It turned out to be a bigger story than we initially expected, but we’re now approaching the end. Season 4 is the next-to-last season, and season 5 will be the final one.
As the story naturally reached a conclusion and the actors and characters matured, ending the show with Season 5 felt like the right decision. They could have continued it, but doing so might have dragged things out and diminished the show’s quality.
The creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, have always said they didn’t want it to go on for too long. Back in 2017, they told EW they wanted a clear ending, preferring to finish while the show was still strong rather than continuing until they ran out of ideas or lost interest. They wanted to end the show at its peak.
The 2 Upcoming Stranger Things Spinoffs Explained

Even though the main Stranger Things series is finishing up, the story isn’t over on Netflix. It’s already been expanded with comic books, novels, and a play called The First Shadow – which explains how Henry Creel and the Mind Flayer came to be. And there’s definitely more on the way, including new TV shows. The first confirmed spin-off is an animated series, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, which will feature a new story with the familiar characters (voiced by different actors) battling threats from the Upside Down between seasons 2 and 3.
A live-action spin-off of Stranger Things is in the works, but details about the plot are currently secret. The creators have clarified it won’t focus on Eleven’s adventures after the main story, nor will it follow Steve and Dustin in college, or a young Holly Wheeler and her Dungeons & Dragons group. Instead, as Ross Duffer told The Hollywood Reporter in December 2025, the spin-off will explore a completely new story within the same Stranger Things universe.
We’re still in the very beginning stages of planning a live-action spin-off series. However, the story for the characters we know from Hawkins and the Upside Down is finished. The new series will take place in a different time period with new characters, but it will still be part of the ‘Stranger Things’ world. We’ve been thinking about this spin-off for a long time and are really enthusiastic about it. We won’t be the main showrunners, but we’ll be closely involved. We plan to focus more on developing it in the new year, and we hope to be able to share an announcement relatively soon.
You Should Never Rule Out Stranger Things Season 6 Happening

While a sixth season of Stranger Things isn’t currently planned, the story isn’t necessarily over. The creators and actors are moving on to new projects, but in Hollywood, revivals are common. We’ve seen stars like Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. reprise their roles in upcoming movies, and shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Scrubs are getting second lives. There’s even discussion about continuing the Game of Thrones universe, so a return to Hawkins isn’t entirely out of the question.
Just because the show has ended doesn’t rule out the possibility of future stories – like another season, a continuation, or a spin-off focusing on a familiar character. While it seems unlikely at the moment, it’s not entirely off the table. All the main characters are still alive, Eleven included, and the show’s underlying story has plenty of room for new directions and even changes to established events. So, while a continuation probably isn’t the best idea, you can never say never when it comes to a popular franchise.
All five seasons of Stranger Things, including the series finale, are now streaming on Netflix.
