Just when viewers thought they knew what to expect from The Traitors, season 4 delivers a completely unexpected surprise.
The fourth season begins with host Claudia Winkleman handing a red cloak to a player, revealing them as the Secret Traitor, before the scene jumps back in time twelve hours.
People across the country were clearly shocked, and everyone was asking the same thing: what does it all mean?
According to Studio Lambert’s creative director, Mike Cotton, each installment in the series is approached like a ‘whodunnit’ – the fundamental gameplay remains consistent, but the surrounding details and challenges are always new and surprising.
“I think it’ll be interesting to try and change the conversation slightly this season.”
Ever wondered about the Secret Traitor and their influence in the game? Keep reading for a detailed breakdown of their role.
What is the Secret Traitor?
In season 4 of The Traitors, a new player called the Secret Traitor has been added, and they have more influence over the game than anyone else.
Claudia Winkleman, like she does each season, selected three Traitors. However, she also secretly chose a fourth Traitor, and neither the viewers nor the other Traitors know who this person is.
Winkleman told the player, who was secretly a Traitor, that they wouldn’t be joining the other Traitors this evening. Instead, they would be in charge of directing them.
This player operates independently and each night narrows down the potential victims to a short list, which the three Traitors then use to decide who to eliminate.
Winkleman clarified that because someone is considered a traitor, they won’t recommend themselves or you for something.
The three Traitors are unaware of which one of them is the secret one, but the person secretly among them knows their identity.

Will viewers find out who the Secret Traitor is?
Okay, so right now, we as the audience are totally in the dark about who the Secret Traitor is. It’s up to us, playing the role of the ‘Faithful’ characters, to figure out their identity. It’s a real ‘who done it’ situation, and we’re all detectives!
After just one episode, we can only guess who the secret Traitor is, but Mike Cotton encourages viewers to pay close attention to clues as the show unfolds.
According to Cotton, the people being interviewed aren’t being dishonest. He explained that their answers would be the same regardless of whether they are secretly a Traitor or one of the Faithful, and it’s up to the viewers to figure out who is who. He added that we’ll have to wait and see how everything unfolds when the Traitor is finally revealed.
Oh, the drama!
You can continue watching season 4 of The Traitors on Friday, January 2nd, 2026, at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. If you missed the earlier seasons, episodes 1-3 are currently available on iPlayer.
