When the Mortal Instruments movie didn’t do well, the Shadowhunters series stepped in to bring the fantasy story back to life. The show, which premiered in 2016, is based on Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments books and blends the human world with a secret society of demon hunters.
Originally shown on Freeform before moving to Hulu, the series built upon the world of angels, demons, and those who maintain order. Although the film adaptation didn’t quite succeed, Shadowhunters demonstrated that this story truly thrived with more in-depth character arcs and extended storylines.

Clary quickly connects with a group of Shadowhunters—Jace, Isabelle, and Alec—who guide her as she learns about the magical world she’s discovered. Together with her best friend Simon, they investigate the disappearance of Clary’s mother. Between battling demons, vampires, and werewolves, Clary finds herself caught up in exciting adventures and complicated relationships, meaning there’s never a dull moment.
Shadowhunters Worked Better Than The Movie
Even though the movie was a more faithful adaptation of the books, the Shadowhunters TV series ultimately expanded the world of The Mortal Instruments in a more satisfying way. The show benefited from having a longer format, letting it delve into storylines and characters that the films didn’t have time to cover.
A highlight of the series is getting to know Alec and Izzy, played by Matthew Daddario and Emeraude Toubia, much better. While they didn’t have a lot of screen time in City of Bones, the series delves deeper into their characters. We see Alec explore his sexuality and Izzy grapple with addiction, which adds complexity and emotional weight to the overall story.
As a viewer, I really appreciated that Shadowhunters didn’t just focus on the action. It took the time to explore the relationships between the demon hunters themselves, letting those bonds develop over the three seasons. This really helped build out the world of The Mortal Instruments, giving us smaller, more intimate moments that made the universe feel richer and more real.
Why Shadowhunters Is Underrated

Viewers who loved the original books weren’t thrilled with the series, finding it wasn’t a very faithful adaptation. The show changed things like the characters’ ages and important plot details, even altering what happened to Clary’s mother.
