**Warning: Contains spoilers for Netflix’s Run Away episodes 1 and 2**
As a total Harlan Coben fan, I was thrilled to see his latest, Run Away, drop on Netflix. It’s his twelfth series for the streamer, and they released the whole thing on New Year’s Day – perfect for a binge-watching start to the year!
Simon Greene, played by James Nesbitt, is a father desperately searching for his daughter, Paige (Ellie de Lange). He eventually finds her playing music in a park, but discovers she’s struggling with drug addiction and doesn’t want to return home. When Paige’s boyfriend, Aaron, appears, Simon believes he’s responsible for her addiction, leading to a physical fight.
After Aaron is found dead in his apartment – the same one Paige used to live in – Simon and his wife, Ingrid, decide to investigate themselves and go to the scene.
Everything quickly gets worse when Ingrid meets with Paige and Aaron’s drug dealer—who works out of a nearby basement—hoping he can lead them to Paige. During this encounter, Ingrid is shot by one of the dealer’s men. This all happens in the first episode, and the second episode focuses on Ingrid’s uncertain recovery in the hospital.
As Simon stays with her, the scene cuts to a memory of their first date at a restaurant. To show a younger Simon and her companion, actors Jessica Nesbitt and Tom Driver were digitally de-aged using visual effects created by Space VFX after filming.

Nesbitt admitted to TopMob that he hadn’t noticed the changes at first. He was enjoying watching and thought he looked good, but then he realized someone had been editing the footage.
He’d previously used prosthetics to appear older for another project, and the results were remarkably realistic—even a little scary. However, this is the first time he’s had his age digitally reversed. He thinks the de-aging effect looks good, although he acknowledges it’s strange knowing it’s not his actual age. He describes the technology as truly impressive.
This is Driver’s first time using this technology, and she confirms that she and Nesbitt were surprised by it during filming. She explains the initial plan was to rely on lighting and makeup to create the illusion, but it proved challenging to make a 55-year-old actor appear as they did in their 20s.
It feels strange, but that’s just because I avoid watching my own work. I’m much more fascinated by the process of creating something than by the finished result.
When I was younger, I was very focused on my appearance – I was figuring things out and wanted to see how I came across as an actress. It was a lot about vanity, and it was a useful learning experience. But now, as I get older, I don’t want to be critical of myself. I remember what I used to look like, especially on screen, and I never want to feel bad about the natural process of aging.
She explained she watched the scene where she appeared younger because she was curious about how the AI would portray her. She was surprised, but ultimately pleased to see it resembled her younger self, bringing back fond memories of her early career. It made her feel grateful to the AI for capturing that likeness and reminded her of some of her first films. She hopes the AI would be proud of her accomplishments.
