Netflix kicked off the new year with a bunch of new movies and shows becoming available on January 1st. Highlights include popular films like Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, David Lynch’s Dune, and the thriller Green Room. They also added Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy, Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, and all five seasons of the series Falling Skies. However, Netflix also removed some content unexpectedly at the start of the year.
Netflix users are accustomed to seeing shows and movies disappear from the service. With more studios launching their own streaming platforms, Netflix isn’t the one-stop shop it used to be, so content doesn’t stay available for very long. Typically, Netflix gives viewers a heads-up when a title is about to be removed, urging them to watch it soon. However, that hasn’t happened this time around.
Netflix Quietly Removes Major Animated Movie Sequel
Netflix has unexpectedly removed The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part from its platform, meaning it’s currently unavailable to stream anywhere, though it’s still available to buy or rent. Considering how successful The LEGO Movie was in 2014, this sequel proves that directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have a knack for turning even questionable concepts into great films. Despite the success of the first film’s catchy song and surprising twist—seamlessly blending live-action with animation—it would have been easy for the sequel to fall flat. However, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part successfully recaptures the original’s charm and offers a similarly imaginative story. It’s not just a great sequel, but one of the best animated films of the decade, and arguably deserves more recognition. Unfortunately, it isn’t currently available on any streaming services.
Currently, it’s tricky to find The LEGO Movie streaming unless you’re willing to rent or buy it. The LEGO Batman Movie is available on HBO Max, but Netflix doesn’t have any of the LEGO feature films. However, Netflix does offer a good selection of LEGO TV series, including multiple seasons of LEGO Ninjago and its spin-offs, as well as LEGO City and LEGO City Adventures. They also have the Pharrell Williams documentary, Piece by Piece. While these shows might not satisfy fans craving The LEGO Movie experience, they’re likely to be a hit with younger viewers.
