The Italian sports world is mourning the loss of one of their own.
Italian golf officials have confirmed that 17-year-old golfer Emanuele Galeppini was one of the 40 people who died in the fire at the Le Constellation bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana. This confirmation came one day after the tragic event.
The Italian Golf Federation is deeply saddened by the loss of Emanuele Galeppini, a promising young golfer known for his dedication and strong character. They shared on Instagram January 1st that their hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.
The statement continued, “Emanuele, you will forever remain in our hearts.”
A fire broke out at Le Constellation bar—a well-known hangout for young people and tourists—around 1:30 a.m. on January 1st, according to Swiss authorities and reported by NBC News. The fire resulted in 40 deaths and approximately 115 injuries.
During a press conference on January 2nd, the attorney general for the Valais region of Switzerland – where the ski resort is located – suggested a rapid, widespread fire, possibly caused by decorative fountain candles, might be to blame for the deadly blaze. However, investigators are still working to determine the exact cause.
According to CNN, Béatrice Pilloud stated that investigators are looking into several possibilities to understand what happened. The leading theory they’re focusing on is a flashover – a sudden surge of electricity – that caused a quick explosion. They have interviewed witnesses and are examining recovered phones for clues.
She explained that the fire most likely began with candles or small celebratory lights on champagne bottles. This quickly spread into a large and intense blaze.
After the heartbreaking event, Swiss President Guy Parmelin canceled his traditional New Year’s Day address and expressed sympathy for those who died.
A joyful occasion in Crans-Montana quickly turned tragic last night, impacting people both nationally and internationally. Switzerland’s Federal Council expressed deep sadness and extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims, those injured, and their families.
