Putting aside the excitement of playing a famous superhero in a movie, there are definitely some downsides. It’s likely that some actors in the upcoming superhero films will struggle with their costumes, which are notoriously uncomfortable. While everyone remembers the jokes about George Clooney’s Batman suit, he actually has a funny story about how difficult filming Batman & Robin was, and it wasn’t because of the nipples!

What Did George Clooney Say About His Batman Suit Being ‘Painful’?

Let’s be honest, when George Clooney took on the role of Batman, fans had high expectations. However, the movie Batman & Robin was a disappointment. Clooney himself has since apologized for the film and often jokes about it, but he also acknowledges that its failure actually helped launch his career as a leading actor.

People might have been more forgiving of George Clooney’s performance as Batman (which he briefly revisited in The Flash without the costume) if they’d known how uncomfortable the suit was to wear. He recently told Variety that filming in the suit “was not the most fun shoot,” and went on to explain his experience.

The Batman suit was incredibly uncomfortable and restrictive. I remember lying on a board while director Joel Schumacher would give me direction through a microphone and speaker. He’d say something like, ‘Alright, George, get ready. Your parents are gone, you have nothing left to live for… and action!’ Then they’d lift me up, I’d deliver the line, ‘I’m Batman,’ and they’d immediately lower me back down and carry me off on the board.

Well, this isn’t ideal, is it? While there are probably worse circumstances to be in when trying to be a superhero, it definitely didn’t help when George Clooney was completely covered in bat guano.

Paul Bettany once had a complete meltdown while in his Vision costume on WandaVision, and Michael Chiklis, who played The Thing in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie, became so panicked and claustrophobic that he almost quit. Luckily, a psychiatrist helped him find ways to deal with it.

Let’s face it, none of these situations are ideal workdays. Considering that, it’s impressive George Clooney and many of his superhero colleagues managed to give convincing performances.
