As a die-hard fan of AkaKana (the dynamic duo Kana Arima and Akane Kurokawa) from the captivating world of Oshi no Ko, I can’t help but feel ecstatic about the upcoming light novel, Futari no Etude. After bidding a tearful goodbye to the manga, this new addition brings a glimmer of hope that our beloved characters will find closure and peace in their complex relationship.
Although the “Oshi no Ko” manga has concluded, there’s much excitement in store for fans over the next few months. For one, we can anticipate the arrival of the third season of the anime adaptation. Additionally, a new light novel titled “Futari no Etude” is planned, delving into the bond between Kana Arima and Akane Kurokawa, two crucial side characters from the story. As revealed by Manga Mogura on X, this light novel will explore their childhood and their relationship following the events of the manga. Essentially, it functions as an epilogue to the main series, offering insight into how these characters cope with the tragic aftermath depicted in the manga.
In addition to the central bond between twins Aqua and Ruby, Kana and Akane form a significant relationship in the manga “Oshi no Ko”. Not only were they competitive actresses, but they also vied for Aqua’s affection at different points within the storyline. Kana is bold and vocal, while Akane is more timid and introverted. As a child, Akane admired Kana, whereas Kana felt challenged by Akane’s abilities and her growing closeness to Aqua. Although the final chapters of the manga suggest that the two girls managed to reconcile and become friends, “Futari no Etude” delves into their ongoing efforts to coexist harmoniously.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead for the Oshi no Ko Ending!
What Happened to Kana and Akane at the End of Oshi no Ko
The manga, “Oshi no Ko,” explores the underlying sinister aspects of the pop idol and acting world. The twins, Aqua and Ruby Hoshino, are the offspring of the late pop sensation Ai Hoshino; Aqua is determined to bring her killer to justice. As the narrative unfolds, both Akane and Kana find themselves drawn to Aqua. Eventually, Akane enters into a relationship with Aqua, but they eventually part ways due to Aqua’s relentless pursuit of his mother’s murderer’s identity.
At the peak of the manga’s storyline, Aqua faces off against his mother’s murderer, none other than his biological father, Hikaru Kamiki. Recognizing that Hikaru poses a threat to his sister, Aqua bravely gives up his own life by pushing them both over a cliff. This selfless act leaves the rest of the characters in shock, including his sister Kana and Akane. Amongst them all, Kana is hit hardest by Aqua’s demise because she couldn’t express her feelings towards him before it happened. At his funeral, she lets out a heart-wrenching cry of love for him and implores him to return from the dead.
The manga concludes on a mix of sweetness and sadness, as Ruby persists in her idol career, bolstered by her companions like Kana and Akane. Previously adversarial figures, they are depicted united in the audience, jubilant over Ruby’s comeback performance. The closing chapter suggests that their rivalry has been resolved, and they have become friends, but a summary of Futari no Etude makes it clear that this is not an accurate portrayal of events in the storyline.
What Will Futari no Etude Be About?
In the manga’s conclusion, it appears that Kana and Akane have buried their rivalry due to their shared connection over Ruby, but the final chapters do not delve deeply into how either character is adjusting to life post-Aqua’s demise. Instead, these chapters mainly focus on everyone grieving Aqua’s passing and Ruby deciding to move forward. Each character plays a significant role in the finale, with Kana acting as Ruby’s bodyguard amidst the paparazzi. However, the last few chapters do not explore the dynamics between the rivals.
In a new story titled “Two Etudes,” we find ourselves after the main events from the series. Characters Kana and Akane are cast together in a play, yet their friendship remains strained. Despite their ongoing disagreements, they acknowledge each other’s talent and decide to rehearse jointly to enhance a particular scene. As they practice, they recall a cherished memory from their childhood, hoping it will provide closure for both characters. “Two Etudes” aims to fill the gaps left in the last installment and strengthen their bond as friends. Now that Aqua is no longer present to fuel tension, Kana and Akane may finally have the opportunity to heal their relationship, a long-standing element of “Oshi no Ko.
