Waterworld Finds New Streaming Home on Prime Video 30 Years Later

I’m so excited to finally be able to stream this movie on a huge platform! While Kevin Costner has done really well in a lot of different kinds of films, this particular sci-fi one didn’t quite catch on with audiences.

Starting January 1st, you can now stream the movie Waterworld on Prime Video. It’s joined a collection of popular titles already available on the platform, including Final Destination: Bloodlines, Warcraft, and the first four Mission: Impossible movies.

Directed by Kevin Reynolds, with a script by Peter Rader and David Twohy, Waterworld takes place in a future where the entire world is covered in water. Set in the year 2500, the film shows the last of humanity struggling to survive on floating homes and whatever is left of the old world.

He’s a wanderer with unique abilities who joins forces with Helen, played by Jeanne Tripplehorn, and her daughter, Enola (Tina Majorino), in a desperate search for dry land. After escaping those who want to capture them, the three embark on a journey to find what’s left of the world above the water, constantly pursued by the dangerous Deacon (Dennis Hopper).

When Waterworld came out in theaters in 1995, it received very mixed reactions from both critics and viewers. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 60

Even though critics didn’t like it very much, Waterworld still earned over $264.2 million in theaters. Surprisingly, the movie also came with a lot of related products, like a four-part comic book series and several video games.

Why Fans are Still Holding Out Hope for a Waterworld Sequel

Ever since the movie Waterworld came out, fans have been asking for a sequel or continuation of the story, and that desire hasn’t faded. In 2021, producer John Fox announced they were developing a new project with director Dan Trachtenberg. Fox mentioned they were still figuring out the exact direction of the show, but were actively in the early stages of development.

Producer John Davis recently revisited some of his past films and was pleasantly surprised by how well Waterworld has aged. He admitted avoiding it for years, believing the final movie didn’t live up to the original script and was troubled by production issues. However, after rewatching it, he realized it actually holds up remarkably well over time.

In November 2025, Trachtenberg expressed his desire for a Waterworld video game, stating he’d like to see a sequel to the film, not a remake. He envisions an open-world, third-person action-adventure game continuing the story.

Waterworld is now available for streaming on Prime Video.
