It’s been six years since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker concluded the Disney sequel trilogy, and fans haven’t heard much about what happens next with those characters. While Disney has announced more Star Wars movies and shows—including some that revisit familiar stories—at least one project will focus on Rey Skywalker. Even if the planned movie about Ben Solo never gets made, Rey’s return should please fans of the sequel trilogy.
News about Rey’s new movie has been quiet recently, but actress Daisy Ridley says returning to the role and that universe for the upcoming film feels “interesting.” Ridley shared these thoughts with ComicBook while promoting her new horror movie, We Bury The Dead, and expressed excitement about the delayed Star Wars project.
Honestly, seeing her now feels so different – she’s grown so much, it’s been six years! I feel like she’s at a really interesting point in her life, and I have a strong feeling this next chapter of her story is going to be amazing. I truly believe the wait will be worth it. For me, every time we see a character return, it’s like rediscovering them, and I’m so curious to see where Rey is now, emotionally and in her journey, when we meet her again.
What’s Happening With Rey’s Solo Star Wars Movie?

The direction of Star Wars will likely change significantly in 2026, as both the heads of Disney and Lucasfilm – Bob Iger and Kathleen Kennedy – plan to step down. While we know about the four movies and TV shows planned for 2026 and Starfighter for 2027, many other projects are currently in development without confirmed release dates, and it’s unclear how far along they are. This includes a new movie starring Rey, sometimes referred to as New Jedi Order. Currently, the project is still taking shape, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (director of Ms. Marvel) set to direct, but several writers have come and gone. There were even rumors it might be cancelled altogether, which some people reacted to with skepticism.
Daisy Ridley has confirmed she’ll be returning as Rey, and while progress is being made on a new film, she says it’s taking time for good reason. She recently told Collider that things are moving at the right pace, emphasizing that “the best things are worth the wait.” In a similar conversation with IGN, Ridley explained that she’s seen scripts dating back five years that now seem promising. She understands the challenges of filmmaking are significant, but she’s confident that the creative team behind the project – particularly a potential adaptation of New Jedi Order – will make the wait worthwhile.
I’ve been hearing rumors that Rey might actually come back before we expect, maybe even with a quick appearance in the upcoming Starfighter movie. It’s just speculation right now, but it would make a lot of sense if Ryan Gosling’s character ended up taking someone strong with the Force to Rey’s new Jedi school. For now, though, we’ll just have to wait and see if it turns out to be true.
