Occasionally, a movie unexpectedly becomes popular on streaming services, leaving viewers puzzled about its success. That’s the case with this film, which has reached the #5 spot on Tubi’s Top 10 list – surprisingly, even the filmmaker has admitted it’s a mess.
Stephen King has openly discussed the circumstances surrounding his 2003 novel and film, Dreamcatcher. He explained that he was heavily medicated with OxyContin for pain at the time and unable to use a computer, so he wrote the entire book by hand. He acknowledges the influence of the medication, stating it’s a book where “the drugs at work” are apparent, and admits he isn’t a fan of the final product. This sentiment is echoed by critics and audiences; the movie adaptation received very poor reviews, scoring only 27% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and 36% on its Popcornmeter.
Dreamcatcher Famously Sucks
In a 2007 interview with Time magazine, Stephen King discussed how he dealt with films that didn’t turn out well, like Dreamcatcher. He admitted he doesn’t try to control the quality, explaining, “I just try to work with talented people.” He acknowledged that a script, director, and all the other elements of a film are unpredictable. King said that even with good intentions, most of his film adaptations—excluding a few like Return to Salem’s Lot and installments of Children of the Corn—still manage to be interesting. However, he conceded that occasional failures, like Dreamcatcher, are inevitable.
I was completely hooked by this movie about four childhood friends who find a man in the woods and end up with these strange, almost supernatural abilities – they call it ‘the line.’ It jumps forward years, and they’re all grown up when a hunting trip goes horribly wrong. They get caught in a blizzard and realize they’re being hunted by something invisible. It’s not just about surviving the elements, though. They have to fight off an alien danger and stop a rogue military guy who’s decided to take the law into his own hands and is targeting innocent people. It’s a wild ride!
Honestly, “Dreamcatcher” tries to do so much – it’s all over the place! One critic from The Times in the UK described it as a weird mix of horror, sci-fi, a buddy movie, a military thriller, and basically a messy version of “The X-Files.” And another reviewer from Sci-Fi Movie Page pretty much agreed, saying it felt like Stephen King had been binge-watching the show when he wrote it.
Whether you’re excited about it or not, the movie Dreamcatcher is now available to watch on Tubi. If you’ve been wanting to see a sci-fi horror film with alien creatures, now’s the perfect time!
