A Beloved Sci-Fi Franchise Hasn’t Lost Its Star After Scrapped Sequel (But Time Is Running Out to Wrap Things Up)

Let’s talk about the future of Avatar. James Cameron is being very upfront: another sequel isn’t a given. He says Avatar: Fire and Ash really needs to perform at the box office to greenlight a fourth film. But here’s the kicker – he’s got a backup plan! If the studio doesn’t bite, he’s threatening to spill all the remaining story details in a press conference. It sounds a little wild, I’ll admit, but I appreciate that he’s determined to finish what he started. Unlike some other sci-fi series I could mention, Cameron doesn’t want to leave fans hanging with an unfinished story.

In the early 2000s, director Guillermo del Toro took on the comic book series Hellboy, which follows a demon who works as a paranormal investigator. He cast Ron Perlman as Hellboy and together they created two movies that critics loved. Although plans for a third film fell through, Perlman still hopes they can make it happen someday.

Perlman explained on The Joe Vulpis Podcast that he feels a responsibility to the fans to make a third Hellboy movie. He still believes it should happen, even at his age of 75, as the original plan was for a three-film series. He’s willing to do it if he finds the right collaborator who’s on board.

Perlman added that getting the project going again wouldn’t be easy. He wasn’t sure if a detailed plan ever existed, but he knew director Guillermo del Toro had a strong vision for the third movie – a vision he thought would have been incredible. That’s why he felt it was a loss that it never happened.

Despite Perlman’s strong enthusiasm, the situation is progressing rapidly and won’t pause for delays. It feels like an opportunity is leaving, and it’s not interested in waiting for those who haven’t already joined.

Hellboy Has a Thing for Promising What It Can’t Deliver

Following the release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Guillermo del Toro was set to direct The Hobbit trilogy, but the project didn’t work out, and he moved on to other films he was passionate about. At the same time, the creators of Hellboy decided to restart the series with a new film starring David Harbour in 2019. However, that movie wasn’t successful, and the recent reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man (2024), also failed to gain traction.

Despite two previous attempts to revive the series not succeeding, it doesn’t appear Guillermo del Toro is being considered now. Everyone involved has moved on to other projects, some of which are proving more successful. Still, it’s encouraging to know he’d be willing to return if the opportunity arises.
