As a fellow researcher and observer of the dynamic world of venture capital, I am thoroughly impressed by Casey Caruso’s remarkable journey. At just 31 years old, her resume is a testament to her relentless pursuit of innovation and progress. From mining crypto as a teenager to angel investing while still in “school,” it’s clear that Casey has always been ahead of the curve.
Casey Caruso, who previously worked as an investment partner at the cryptocurrency-oriented venture capital company Paradigm, is launching a new startup venture firm called Topology with a $75 million financial backing.
2022 saw Caruso, recognized by Forbes as one of the top 30 under 30, expressing in a recent blog post on December 12th, his support for founders who are willing to take significant risks to steer the direction of human advancement.
From May 2021 through January 2023, she spent time working at Paradigm. Prior to that, she held the position of crypto specialist at Bessemer Venture Partners for approximately two and a half years.
Over the past eight years, the previous partner at Paradigm Investment has put money into a diverse range of ventures, including brain-computer interfaces, decentralized systems, semiconductor technology, and even the development of new urban areas.
Under his leadership, Caruso was responsible for managing several cryptocurrency investments at Paradigm, including Coinbase, Fireblocks, Blast, Optimism, Uniswap, MakerDAO, Chainalysis, MoonPay, Gitcoin, and Friend.tech.
According to Fortune’s report, Topology secured a $75 million investment round, with Cendana Capital and Accolade Partners spearheading the fundraising. The investment was also backed by an unnamed OpenAI co-founder, Marc Andreessen and Chris Dixon from VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, one of the creators of GPT-4, and Bob Goodman, a managing partner at Bessemer Venture Partners.
American celebrity and tech investor Paris Hilton even contributed to Caruso’s new fund.
Caruso said Topology had been in stealth mode for seven months before launching on Dec. 12.
At the age of 15, Caruso, now 31, began creating open-source software, and continued mining cryptocurrency during her school years.
She used those profits to start angel investing — providing capital to startups often in exchange for ownership equity.
The serial investor also worked as an engineer at Google and had a brief stint studying neuroengineering at Harvard University before dropping out to work for Paradigm.
In the third quarter of this year, investment in cryptocurrency ventures decreased by 17% compared to the previous quarter, amounting to approximately $2.4 billion from a total of 478 deals, as per the report published by Galaxy Research on November 15th.
However, early-stage companies — Topology’s primary focus area — accounted for 85% of the funding.
